Import permit for projectiles into USA?

Ship it as tool parts pay the duty and …

Not the best researched advice but it’s worked for me in the past. Your results may vary but it got to me no problem for what it’s worth?

Depends on where it is coming from. EU countries have a permit requirement. I've contacted a couple retailers in UK, Germany, and Sweden or Norway... Forget which. Permitting was a major hassle. Something you'd likely only work though if you were importing for your business. Can't speak for Australia, New Zealand, Africa....etc

Tool parts idea will never work because a legit business will never risk doing that for me.

As far as importing “for my business”

I actually sent the ATF a request for information and clarification from my business email.

Why ATF? I don't think regular bullets are regulated by ATF, I would have thought US Customs is what you'd probably need to contact.

I’ve found a load of Woodleigh projectiles overseas and I’m wondering if an import permit is needed for bullets?

Not loaded ammo… just the projectiles to reload with.
@deewayne2003
I've shipped eoodleigh hydros to a member in the US. Listed them as a gift and experimental gas plugs.
He got the within 10 days from Oz no problems.
Not the best advice , I have also sent cartridge cases and a barrel to the US as a gift no question asked listed as brass casings and pipe.

@Tanks …. You would think so, but there is a method to my madness.

I contacted the ATF first because I know I will be eventually forwarded to them.

You have to understand that every government entity employee that responds to emails, will always try to pass the buck….

example- I contacted CBP about bringing legal caught sport fish back with me from Costa Rica

“We have no restrictions on legal caught sport fish, however there may be regulations beyond our jurisdiction- You should contact US fish and game”

which I did…. Before it was all said and done, I had email responses from CBP, US Fish & Game, US department of Agriculture, TSA & FDA!

I’ve found that when dealing with government agencies regarding clarification on regulations- I makes a HUGE difference on where the question originated from.

So upon receiving response from ATF, I will address by their concerns and then send an email to Customs(or what ever agency the buck gets passed to) with the ATF response letter attached.

Government agents are fare less likely to shut you down if they see another agency has agreed with you.

I feel for you.
Something we know so well and such an innocuous item crosses a border and ........

As noted, origin, route/method of transport and destination all matter.
Multiple scopes of responsibility and overlap, it is government, always create nightmares.

There is a specific mention of projectiles and the specific tax status. Perhaps these guy can "pass you off" to the right department for an answer,

I deal with legit business who ship such things as "machine parts".

Actually, it's going to be the Department of State, because such items fall under ITAR (International Trade in ARms).

DoS does not like things that go bang. They will go as far as to consider brass as ammo "unless the shipping country does not consider it a controlled item." When I asked German Zollamt about shipping brass and whether it is considered a controlled item, they looked at me like I had three heads. But maybe that's how Zollamt looks at every American.

In Germany, powder is controlled under license, but that's it. Primers? Nobody cares about primers.

From where are you having them shipped?

Brickburnn- Thank you for relative & on point information!

Bullets are located in Australia, SafariDave so please explain to me how youcomment helps in anyway?

Because the business holding these bullets WILL NOT ship unless every i is dotted and T crossed in triplicate.

Weren't most sporting components moved out of ITARs and into Commerce regs a couple of years ago?
In theory... but what is a "sporting component"? Optics are still ITAR. Brass, when I last looked was ITAR. Fully loaded rounds, for personal use were moved out, but are limited at 5kg. So step one is to figure out what the ITAR limits are and go from there, CBP is not going to do that for you... Most vendors won't either...

Heard back from the ATF….

personal use import application - 6 page form to fill out and 60day wait for approval, no cost for application.

Or register as an importer - 2 page form processed in 2 weeks and $250yr form

Nice to have heard back from ATF. I recall after the 1968 Gun Act purchase of bullets from mfg required an FFL. Bullets were waived in the mid 1980s act. So now bullets can be ordered mail order. So it's possible that ordering them across an international boundary may not be too big of an issue, provided the exporting country doesn't have a problem with it.

@RayB ….. “Provided the exporting country doesn’t have a problem with it.”

We are talking about Australia here; where being caught with a Remington 870 Wingmaster pump action 12ga will get you the same jail time as being caught in the USA with an unregistered full auto UZI with an obliterated serial number.

Thats spot on correct...

Was going to shoot you a PM (my firm imports and exports "controlled" items quite a bit.. we deal with DOS DDTC and DOC routinely on this sort of thing)... but it looks like you already have the answer..

projectiles arent controlled items.. you just need a personal use import application...

Dont trust the 60 day wait though.. that's what they are SUPPOSED to do.. and at times they have been faster than that.. but lately they have been running on a skeleton crew just like everyone else (the "great resignation and all that mess, COVID, etc... etc..).. and things have been pretty backed up in all of the assorted import/export shops across the fed gov..

Plan on 90-120 (don't let the delay frustrate you).. and be excited if you are fortunate enough that you get your import license back in 60 or less..

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.

Hello:
I’ll take the .375 Whitworth for $1,150 if the deal falls through.
Thanks .
