If you could only do one, or one more safari

To everyone saying lord derby eland and Cameroon, don’t put off going. You look at countries in the region Chad, CAR, Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger and realize Cameroon will not be stable forever. Don’t put off going, I don’t think it will be available in the near future. If you see Cameroon you’ll understand more clearly. A lord derby eland is probably the greatest trophy you can take in Africa at the moment.

I’m afraid you’re probably right. As the world foolishly goes to EV ( in my opinion ) and the rare earth minerals that are needed to fill the appetite for these grow the power struggle for these countries that have deposits of them grows they will become even more unstable not to mention Islamic extremism working it’s way south out of North Africa the future doesn’t seem too bright. Add poaching and a plethora of other problems that seem too numerous to list.

Keeping it realistic to our means and home....
We were lucky to go once, would love to go back. I would likely want to go to SA again, largely because I feel there is alot there we would still like to do and see...and steer the trip more to my wife. We would like to spend more down time in the Eastern Cape. The only real game I still would like to hunt within our means would be a Blue Wildebeest and a Gemsbuck (preferably hunted in the Karoo). We would both also like to have a couple days to spend in Grahamstown during thier annual arts festival, and visit nearby Addo elephant preserve. I would bring my 8x57 Mauser to hunt with. Finish up with three or four days in Cape Town.

Guessing you're european as well by the caliber. Had the 8mm lovethe caliber but upped to 9mm mauser aka 9.3x62

I’m sure this topic has already been discussed at length but what would you choose if you could only do one safari for those that haven’t been, or one more safari for those that have?
Where would you go?
Who would you hunt with?
What would you hunt?
What rifle/cartridge would you use?
I would go back to South Africa to hunt kudu and buffalo with my first PH, Glen. Great guy. Like a son to me. I would again use my old WWII Springfield 30-06 for kudu and the 404 Mauser 98 I just built for buffalo. He is anxious to see that thumper gun. Next year I hope. Looking for fourth kudu and third buffalo.

Where? Probably not Africa but anywhere that the government doesn't think I'm a rich American cow with a big bank account who needs to be milked, nor someplace a white man needs to take a handful of pills every day to keep from getting cooties. If just permethrin soaked clothing doesn't work 100%, don't want to be there.
With whom? Someone who's been born where we hunt, knows the area intimately, has intelligence but guts too.
Hunt What? Anything that is legal. Not thrilled about ending up like a certain dentist.
Rifle/Cartridge? Pick one but define the specific mission, use the tool to suit.

This is absolutely fantastic news, Osama. Too bad I don’t have Facebook. But my daughter does, so I will ask her to check it out.
The owner did not set a price but the minimum is $10 000. He will take the higher price. He is saling the land and need the Rhinos to go. Sad in my opinion.

Could you PM the information, I'm not on Facebook and my dad is looking for a Rhino. I would greatly appreciate it.

I see a lot of mentions of members wanting to hunt West African species. Ten years ago when Burkina, Benin and CAR provided those species along with Cameroon and ROC, specials could be seen for LDE and buffalo for 15K. Bongo and Sitatunga or Elephant could be had for under 20K. I remember a buffalo hunt for 5k including trophy fee.

With terrorism shutting down countries you will be fortunate to get a bongo or LDE hunt for under 40k today. There is a very real chance there will be no LDE hunting in five years. If you want to go and it's in your budget it may be good to start planning.

I spent two weeks in the Okavango in 1991 hunting out of 2 different camps, on foot and makoro. I think I could do that again for even longer.
But I would have to go back in time to do it, things have changed there.
A friend of mine hunted there in 91 and 92. He had a great time and also hunted out of two camps. One for plains game, and one for buffalo.

It would have to be 10 days spike camp in Namibia with my son. Kudu, Eland and Oryx.
Rifle would be my CZ550 in 30-06 with 180 grain Nosler partitions.
2 bottles of my favourite malt whisky

Great choice!

Rhinoceros (It’s the only member of the African Big 5 which I’ve never even once been able to hunt).

With a Heym Jumbo sidelock ejector in .600 Nitro Express.
Hunter-Habib,

Our mutual friend Cal Pappas would have probably agreed with your answer except for make of the double. But rhino with a .600 would be a great way to round out the big 5.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
