Ideas for our resident artisan's

Tangental to @mdwest I have a grilling need that can't be fulfilled in the marketplace.

I only cook with whole-lump charcoal, a pretty standard practice for Big Green Ego, Primo, Komado Joe, Ugly Drum Smokers, and traditional Texas Offset-firebox grills.

To get the process of lighting your grill going quickly, you use a chimney starter to start your coals. The standard one is a weber brand one of which I destroy one every year from heat. (they are junk) There are equally junk off-brand ones.

I've looked everywhere for a $100 quality, $100 price chimney starter that holds enough lump charcoal to fill my XL BGE grill. Does not exist.
Hey Rook,

I use the same lump hardwood/mesquite charcoal. I use an electric charcoal starter instead of the chimneys. They run about $20.00, and I replace them about every 2 years.

Maybe worth a try??

In my egg it gets so hot I’m worried if I forgot it I’d have a burnt heating element. The slow and wasteful method is to drop starter cubes into a pile of charcoal and wait an hour for it to get moving. A chimney starter gets me ready to sear steaks in ten minutes.

I’ve seen people use map gas torches to get things hot quick, I might try that if I can’t get a good chimney starter.

Jeez stop being a cheapskate....go buy a rugby.... :A Banana: :D Beers:

Spike, why are you "Sticking" it to everyone today?

I think there might be more Blaser shooters here than Rigby supporters.

Not sure why you would think I need those

I think the Havalon and Scalpel blades might have a place. But it's off topic with Artisan products. There was mention of a field kit for caping etc early in the thread, again is going to be costly but a nice item for the discerning hunter who has everything.

Scalpel blades, cheap scalpels and other things could be good for Caping out. My mate likes his Havalon for scalping foxes.

Yeah know off topic...didn't know if you knew bout them ,as sounded bit like what you were on about ...scalpels only thing one of the taxidermists here uses and gives his staff

As a South African I braai a lot. My main effort goes into cutting hard wood - Sekelbos, Mopanie etc. Still 382 saw and a Wetterlinks axe.

As far as braai tools go, a simple stainless grid that folds over and holds the meat and some stainless tongs to turn individual pieces are sufficient.

I bought a knife from Gary and will in future buy another hunting knife or carving set for aroast.

I think there is a market for top quality cleaning rods, that fold away, both for rifle and shotgun in a travel case or leather tool roll, obviously with all the accessories such as jags, turksheads, oilbottles etc. Obviously also turnscrews and perhaps even wall thickness gauges for shotguns. They will command a premium, but are investments like a bespoke hunting knife, and I will certainly invest in them.

Re designed the braai knife template to take some of the bulk out of it. Enough depth at the handle end to allow for cutting on a board without catching the knuckles and lighter toward the tip to reduce bulk. Will get to the fork tomorrow.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
