Ideal African battery on BRNO ZKK actions

Hi lvW,

I cannot see the need for a 300H&H if you already have that nice ZKK 600 30-06!
I agree you would need a ZKK602 to make the 300. But you will end with a heavier and longer rifle to make almost the same with the 30-06 you already have!! As much as I like the 7x57, down from the 30-06 the logical choice is a short 6,5.

Good luck!

Because the H&H has penache would be my guess!

Yes the .300 H&H is a cool old timer & yes with hand loads (even some factory) the 30/06 is the same or more than the factory .300 H&H loads (if you can find them) but again you can warm up the H&H to.

I think we have to consider what the Poster likes/wants not our tastes or likes !

I think the ZKK602 is too large a action for the .300Win, .358Norma & .458Win, thats why I put a 458Win ZKK602 barrel on my ZKK600 action, fits great now.

On that I just got my ZKK601 308Win out & filled the magazine up with 6.5X55 Norma Vulkan 156gr cartridges, granted these are flat nosed & only just fit but the 156gr is a big slug for your job.

The 6.5X54 Mannlicher isn't up to your specs but it is a great old classic cartridge also which I use a bit but only because I have a few Mannlicher 1903's & some 6.5X53R in my Steyrs that I love.

Neither of which will fit into the short action rifle I want to convert...so not an option.....
ZKK601 short action....nothing else...
Ok makes sense.
A .260 loaded with 125gr Partitions or 129gr Interbond will handle Black Wildebeest perfectly, I have 120gr Rhino and they are pretty inconsistent with nose shape so I would be hesitant to rely on them for longer shots.

Hi Sarg,

Yes!! I see de ZKK 600 a lot better than the 602 for the 458 Win!! Even if it is liked to load the 458 with a longer OAL than the factory, as the chamber leade and magazine allows.
About the battery posted by lvW, I think anyone of us can post our tastes as a colaboration in a positive way. He will do what he likes, of course!

Best!

I would throw a vote out there for a .257 robert’s, but do not know of availability in your country, I know it’s a great little whitetail deer cartridge, good luck

I would keep the 06 and have it do the job of the 300/7x57. Both are excellent cartridges. But the ubiquity of the 06 and decreasing my rifle count would keep me with the 06. As I’ve gotten older I have tended to simplify things. My African battery is 416 RM, 375 HH, 06 in bolts. Use a 500/416 in the double.

@IvW you must keep us updated on your project. Pictures would be appreciated.
What barrel profiles and lenghts would you have in the 260Rem 7x57 and 300H&H?
I think 260Rem will be a good choice in the ZKK601 , just a little heads up concerning rate of twist as others also have pointed out.

I would do:

602 with pop up peep: 500 Jeffery
602 with pop up peep: 404 Jeffery

600: 9,3x62
600: 7x64

601: 22-250
601: 222

It fits every short action I have. Is the Brno shorter than normal?
Exactly my thinking. In any event the 6.5C a shorter cartridge than the 260Rem Furthermore, the ZKK action and the magazine box length allows you to exceed SAMI specs in as far as OAL is concerned.
If classic is your objective 260 Rem also not your answer. Rhino 150gr at 2700 - 2750, must be joking. Rhino - no go.

Given that 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to operate in 7.62 NATO weapon systems with little more than barrel change, I had doubts that the cartridge wouldn't fit a ZKK 601.

SAAMI lists the following specs for overall cartridge lengths:
.308 Win Min 2.490" Max 2.810"
6.5 C Min 2.700" Max 2.825"

So 0.015" difference. Not much but may, or may not, be enough to cause a problem.

One of my ZKKs is a 601 in 308 Winchester manufactured in 1975. Not having any 6.5 Creedmoor rounds, I made up some test .308s with an overall length the same as the SAAMI maximum for 6.5 Creedmoor ie 2.825". I loaded five rounds into the magazine. They fitted the magazine with and had a small amount of clearance.

Its possible that manufacturing variations may mean that 6.5 Creedmoor may not fit in all ZKK 601 mag boxes. If contemplating such a calibre change it would be best to check your specific rifle to confirm fit before going too far into the project.

So I am working on completing my African rifle battery.

243 WM ZKK601(pop up peep sight) to convert to 260 Rem

Main headache now is to deside on the 243W conversion.....

I love classic calibers but am not advers to modern.

The 243 W although a classic in its own right shoots too fast the bullets are too light for caliber and it is a meat waster....
No need to convert the .243 Winchester.

Once, Barnes made a 115 gr .243 dia. round nose.

I still have 200 of this bullets in stock.

Barrel twist may not stabilize that bullet. I will measure the twist and see

Seeings as I just bought a Brno ZKK600 30-06 today I may stick with....

Thank you so much appreciated

No problem, I only saw it in the last few weeks & it is a later model, no pop up sight & not the classic stock if that is still Ok ?

I know I prefer both the peep sight & classic stock my self but the other stock may be better for scope use ?

Ok by me...have extra pop ups could add it

@Mac Baren, I live central to city of Cincinnati. I have work travel early this week but could hopefully meet later this week (with no schedule changes). What area of town are you working/staying in?
Kind regards
