I need a companion rifle for the 500J

I would go with the 300 H&H.

Which left handed magnum action are you going to use?

I have been using the .300RUM with a left handed Blaser action to complement my .500NE double for those long shots.
Took a red stag in Argentina with it way past 300+ meters as well.

I think something in the 30 cal range is the answer tbh.

Hi,

9,3x62 with 250 grs bullets. Handoladed at 2650 f/s or same NORMA or RWS.

There less overlap with the 500 than would happen with the 375 but my feeling is i need to center the selection in the in medium to large antelope.

As I said earlier, I don't want to have two different loads for the 375, it's my working gun. This is a three year project that will be my retirement celebration. And anyway, now the bug has bit.

The problem is I need to reach out 3- 400 meters. This isn't a feature of the 333 Jeffery. Also ammo availability gives me pause.

300 H&H does better in that regard. The 8x68mm also looks good on paper. (If anyone has experience with it, let me know)

I have taken Elk with my 8x68s Blaser R8 using 220gr SGK out to near 400yds. The only problem with the 8X68s is the availability of factory ammunition and brass. I think NECG sales RWS ammunition. I use to buy brass from Huntington’s but they closed shop a while back. It is a good caliber if you hand load and can find a source to support it.

Early on used the 210 Nosler partition . Then Nosler came out with the 225 gr and I never looked back. Handload using Re19 and the 225 partition was giving me 3000fps.
Also carried a couple of 250 gr as followup. Never needed them.

I am down to my last 200 rounds from Kynoch - sadly they recently closed - so will see out my days - have the calibre in a 1910 WR and a BSW shul double - having a tactical sniper built on a savage action in same calibre - for little more than a bet for a bottle of Klippie Red !

Told as a joke was building a 318WR tactical rifle - the lodge owner said free Klippie for life if he got to shoot it. So, a barrel was ordered, ammo was in stock, and a 30-06 Savage will be sacrificed at the stroke of midnight!

Hornady Precision Hunter .300 RUM 220gr ELD-X goes at 2,910 fps and will kill any African game large or small at any reasonable distance. And there is hardly any recoil to feel unless one lives in a cabin in the boonies of Canada.

I faced your exact conundrum a few weeks ago. Ended up bringing my trusty .375 H&H to pair with the .500 Jeffery. Wanted to have a serviceable DG backup in a pinch. Shot my buffalo early in the hunt and ended up taking a number of plains game with the .375 H&H. Worked well.

That said, I'd vote .300 H&H for you. Classic and good reputation for reaching out for longer shots too. Although, if you get a wild hair and want a .333 Jeffery, I happen to have one that I could part with. Have brass, bullets, and dies too. Really cool gun that I just am not putting to use right now

What would the max range you would be comfortable with hunting large PG using the 333J?
