I finally bought a shotgun... sorta...

Nice drilling! I had a very similar Sauer drilling, same 16x16(65mm)/8x57JR configuration. I shot Gamebore 16 ga. traditional upland 65mm and RWS 8x57JS ammo in it.
However, mine had a little plunger built in to the rifle extractor in addition to the regular extractor. ( can't see your pictures well enough to know if yours is so equipped) I found that I could shoot regular "rimless" American (SAAMI) 8mm Mauser cartridges in it with no sign of excess pressure and no problem extracting. "8MM Mauser" as loaded by Remington and Federal etc. is a kinda low pressure in-between loading with a light 170 grain bullet that is in between the two correct CIP 8mm diameters. The loading is designed to be safely used in old smaller bore 8mm's without too much pressure.
I preferred the much more powerful RWS loading of 198 grain bullet at about 2400 fps, but you may find the regular 8mm Mauser loads work OK in your gun.

im going to try and stick with .318" bullets to protect both myself and the rifle. your not the first person ive heard of doing this and i was told it was safe but it still makes me nervous

as for the extractor, yes the 8mm has a separate extractor to life it clear of even the 16g shells.

Sorry the above quote was a mis-type and should read "and RWS 8x57JR ammo in it" I did not shoot .323" "S" bore ammo in my rifle and do not suggest you do so in yours.

Never ever ever shoot .323's that rifle bore - I don't care how lightly loaded they are. You are just asking to damage a fine weapon. The action of that drilling is not nearly as strong as a M98 and the chamber has darn little metal compared to a normal rifle. The US loading was to try to protect the uninformed from themselves (no offense Longwalker) - not to offer a round for either bore. Not sure where that scope base was made - though likely of European origin - I would assume a German gunsmith's solution. At least it doesn't appear to have been butchered by a shade tree North American gunsmith! JJ Perodeau http://jjperodeau.com/ could likely come up with something that would work. Might want to send him pictures and get an estimate of the work.

I shoot combination guns quite a bit and most are inherently very accurate - so long as the ribs and action are still tight. I assume you ensured the gun is still on face and that the barrels ring true. Might be worth the scope ring investment. Both my 8x57R's are true MOA rifles and the shotgun barrels fire IC and full. On nearly all drillings, the right shotgun barrel will typically shoot a Breneke slug to the sights at fifty meters. Gave the jaeger a second shot on boar during a drive hunt. That is a beauty,and probably the best of both worlds for the type of hunting you're describing. I also think you are on the right track with iron sights. Most scopes would be counter-productive for wingshooting

The Germans figured that out almost a hundred years ago. One doesn't shoot flying game with the scope attached. They are dismountable on a drilling. A German jaeger can sit in his highseat with a drilling and shoot a roe deer at 175 yards or put a load of sixes into a fox at thirty. He can take the same gun on a drive hunt, with scope dismounted, and be ready for a brace of pheasants or a 300 lb boar - all by moving the selector. And thanks to Teutonic engineering, a claw or Krieghoff mounted scope always returns to zero. Suspect JJ could create a set of rings for this slotted rib thing that would also work.

Just a thought re 2 1/2" shells. The issue with 2 3/4 " shells in a 2 1/2" is not usually about pressure of the shell itself it is about the pressure that could spike to dangerous levels due to the forcing cone which could cause serious issues if using the longer shell in the 2 1/2" chamber. (A blockage in fact) Buy yourself some 2 3/4" length shells and shorten them. Add a card over the shot and roll turnover the end.
If the shorter shells are hard to find where you are this may work for you. Aye

Matt85: Beautiful drilling you have there! Interestingly, I happen to have its plainer-looking sibling. Same style and chambering, same horn trigger guard, but without the nice engraving. Like yours, mine is also of 1937 manufacture. On the plus side, I did manage to get it with the see-thru claw mounts and an ancient Weaver K3 scope.
