The feast was splayed out across the kitchen island and adjacent cabinets, as well as two full-size tables. There were hams, both cut and uncut, smoked and fresh and honey glazed, huge mounds on huge platters. Nestled close beside was the storied cornbread dressing, golden brown and moist and without a hint of sage. Without a doubt the centerpiece of the feast, it was accompanied alongside by the homemade giblet gravy and cranberry sauce, tinged with toasted pecans and a hint of orange zest.

Platters of chicken and smoked turkey. Platters of golden, deep fried turkey!

The potatoes steamed in their serving pieces; sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes. And the casseroles. Broccoli and rice, green chili and cheese, green bean. Delicious all.
Cream peas and purple hull peas. Squash dishes and fresh spinach dishes. Creamed corn and field corn and the spicy cheesy corn. Dinner rolls and sourdough rolls.

Fruit salads, with the fruit painstaking peeled by hand, with love, and 5 cup fruit salads. Pickled peaches and pear halves.

Lord, give me rest!

The rest necessary to venture into another adjacent room, where desserts layout as children’s gifts under the Christmas tree!

Pecan pies and apple pies and chocolate pie! Pumpkin pies, both traditional and chiffon, with toasted coconut and whipped cream for garnish. Dump cake and coconut cake and Red Velvet cake. German chocolate cake!

Thanksgiving probably the best holiday, a day to count your Blessings.
But I'm thankful for Friday after Thanksgiving, leave for Saskatchewan to go Whitetail and Wolf hunting.

A short version of my early Thanksgivings - my favorite holiday.

I spent my Thanksgivings with an elderly couple that I "adopted" as my grandparents. I came from a dysfunctional family, and my 'grandparents' were my safe haven, my constant during turbulent years. So when mom and dad would trundle up and head for big family gatherings in Kansas City, I would spend the holiday with my 'grandparents'.

Thanksgiving was three things: a big meal, football, and trapping. Grandpa taught me how to trap and it was my passion through college. During HS and college, I would get up early, check my line (covering 3 counties), and head home for a mid-afternoon meal, followed by a bit of football. The evenings were spent by the woodstove in the shop, dealing with the day's catch, which could often run 10-20 critters to deal with. Thanksgiving was in the middle of the opening week of season for me: I ran my largest lines for about a week on either side the holiday.

Oh, and grandpa hated turkey. Our meals featured duck.

I miss my grandparents, grandma's meals, long cold hours on the line, and the simplicity of those days, not realizing at the time that was the closest I would come to a dreamed of Jeremiah Johnson type of life.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all things; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and take the time to embrace those things in your own lives that truly make you thankful. I know I will.

One of my favorite meals of the year!

Our menu will be... ham, brined turkey roasted, gravy, mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, carrots, collards, green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese and some form of sweet potato.
I just pour gravy over everything.

I'll probably whip up some venison and pork sausage balls for an appetizer.

Are you a Canadian at heart? When I was in Saskatchewan, they asked if I wanted gravy on everything!
Puotine/gravy on french frys no thanks give me ketchup. eh

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. A time for the family to come together. Unfortunately, virtually all of our families are gone now. My brother will stop by with his girlfriend for dessert. Still, I’ll cook a full feast for my wife and I, to continue the tradition and relive times past.
There is much to be thankful for. Wishing all of you a very happy Thanksgiving.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
