I’m itching for a new rifle or shotgun

Get Joseph Smithson to build you a custom made .505 Gibbs on a Granite Mountain Arms African Magnum Mauser action. Or get a Merkel Sidelock Ejector in .500 Nitro Express.

Among shotguns, see if you can get a Beretta Model 486 Parallelo in 12 Gauge (3 ” Magnum)

I love the idea of the Savage 99 in either .250-3000 or .300 Savage. I have one of each.

As to the .257 Roberts, that is a great choice. Even better would be .257 Roberts Ackley Improved. I will assume you reload. You can use either the factory .257 Roberts ammo or the reloaded .257 Roberts AI in it. The factory ammo will then be fire formed into the .257 Roberts AI.

You need either a Model 70 in .338 Win Mag or a svelte British 20 gauge BLE.

.257 OR #5mm Rem Mag ;) (Each and Every shot will be taken as if the ammo were made of gold!) In c. '80, a friend would walk around with his (box of ammo $50-$100 for rimfire!) and I'd shoot all small game and varmints in sight (.22 WMR $10/box) I see they're down to $25/box these days and actually available (as everyone wants their inferior .17 version!)

After broadcasting that list of fine firearms internationally, I trust your guns are very secure! How much did you get for the 'Cruiser?

Fine rifles he makes. $1,800 to install his rather nice open sights on any gun.

Having just gone through the painful process of renewing all my firearm licenses in SA, and more or less getting them in sync, so that i don’t have to do it yearly for one or two rifles - remember a license is only valid for ten years, then the mess starts again. I realized I haven’t bought a new rifle in two yesrs. Its time again!

My current battery consists of the following

.177 Weihrauch HW97K
.22 Brno Mod 1
.22 Brno Mod 2
.222 Sako L461
.243 Tikka T3 Superc Varmint
.250 Savage FN Supreme
6,5x55 Tikka M695
6,5x57 Brno Mod 22f
7x57 Brno Mod 21
7x57 FN Supreme
.308 Tikka CTR
8x60S Brno ZG47
9,3x62 A-type Mauser
.375 Ruger Alaskan
.450/400 3&1/4” Gibbs
.416 Ruger Alaskanx
16 Br FN S/S
12 Br FN S/S
12 Br Miroku o/u
12 Br Winchester Defender Pump
.44 Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk
9mm Glock 19
9mm Glock 19
9mm SIG P250

Ideas that pop up in my head are as follows:
# Find a Gibbs .450 3&14”, sell a kidney and have two similar doubles

# get hold of a good looking Savage 99 in .250 or .300. Ive always wanted a lever-action rifle, and its handy for pigs over hounds

# .257 Bob. Always fascinated me. Build on a light stock for mountain work on Vaalies, Reedbuck, fallow deer and even black wildebeest

# Find a pre-64 .300 H&H in good nick. Thats another dream come true rifle

# Of late the idea of a dainty 20 gauge to play with spurfoul or a 12 gauge paradox have also kept me awake.

Anyhow. Any input would be welcome. If just sold my little SWB Cruiser for a good price so I need to buy a gun in her memory…

10 years ...you are lucky...3 years here....so have to keep checking as expire at different times.....

Considering your wonderful current selection of calibers and type of firearms, this is my suggestion to fill in the "gaps" :

#1 a dainty 20 gauge to play with spurfowl
#2 a good looking Savage 99 in .300
#3 Find a pre-64 .300 H&H

20 ga is made for the uplands, just wonderful to carry all day behind a brace of pointing dogs.
I've owned a .257 Roberts, Liked it, but your 6.5mm's will do the same job, a little better
I've owned a couple of .250 Savage M99's, and ammunition availability and the original limits of rifling twist to light 87 gr. bullets makes that choice problematic for pig hunts. 300 or .308 is a better choice.
A 300 H&H M70 is like gold, pick it up when you find it, but don't hold your breath ;-)

have fun shopping!

@Dewald did you get 10 years on your 9mm’s through dedicated sport shooting? I’ve been wondering if I could motivate another pistol through my dedicated hunters, maybe a .22lr, for finishing game.

Dedicated hunting and dedicated sportshooting

Thanks for all the responses and ideas.

I haven’t bumped into a .30-06 that I liked that was for sale. Nothing against the caliber. I shot my first springbuck with one. I think I might just hold out until I can get hold of a Mod70 in .300 H&H that is unmolested.

My dad had or still has a 6,5x54 Mannlicher. I sure wouldn’t mind one

I can't recommend that rifle enough. Both the rifle and the caliber are absolute tops.

Dewald you are missing a few calibers not just one or two! I second the suggestion of a classic .404 and a real big bore in the .500 class. Being a Gibbs fan I would obviously suggest a 505. Then At the other end of the scale you need a 6.5 aGrendel which you can pimp or leave standard. It is a nice light rifle to lug up the mountains , is cheap to run and punches above its weight! I use it on all my cull hunts and it’s a great rifle to teach youngsters how to shoot.
You are also missing the 7x64.
