Kwalata Safaris is a South African-based outfitter organizing selective hunting Safaris for international clients in South Africa, Mozambique, and other African destinations since 1988. Kwalata is owned and operated by Jaco Strauss, a well-respected veteran of the industry who guarantees an exceptional experience for returning hunters and newcomers alike.

Where it All Began
From childhood Jaco, your outfitter & host, has had a passion for hunting and all places wild. At a young age, he joined his father on several safaris. Here he was able to hone his bush skills and spend as much time as possible in the bushveld of South Africa’s Lowveld fascinated and captivated by wildlife and nature.

After completing high school in 1997, Jaco pursued a degree in Zoology and Botany and finally completed his professional hunting license in 2000. Here he could not only fulfill his hunting dreams but also spend all available time completely absorbed in nature and all its splendor.

During his apprenticeship, he gained valuable experience in Dangerous game hunting in the Southern African region Including Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana. He was fortunate enough to hunt and learn from industry leaders at the time.

The Kwalata Way
We continue to invest and grow our relationship with African communities in both South Africa and Mozambique. We have experienced firsthand the value of community involvement in conservation. The modern-day safari industry is so much more than just a “feeding program”.

It is for exactly this reason that Kwalata actively engages and involves the communities where we operate in the training of safari staff, antipoaching teams, and professional hunters. This provides an educational & financial incentive to communities, ensuring the survival of Africa’s last wild places.

“We are passionate about what we do and guarantee every hunter will leave with the experience of a lifetime”.

During my 15 year career, I have been fortunate in being able to hunt most provinces in South Africa as well as Mozambique. My passion undoubtedly lies with big game hunting, but I have developed quite an affinity for wing shooting.

North West & Kalahari
In the very corner of South Africa bordering Botswana and Namibia lies our new 100 000 acre hunting block! In the extremes of this beautiful semi-arid to the arid desert landscape.

Hunters can expect the challenge of quick long shots on great trophies such as Eland; Wildebeest, Springbuck, Ostrich, Steenbuck, Duiker with great Sand Grouse opportunities.

A short flight from Upington to the Mier lodges nestled in the dunes makes this area a good option to combine with wing shooting located in the Free State or Cape Town.

There are three rustic lodges within a short distance of each other hidden between the undulating dunes. Single story and built on a curve they take on the shape of a dune and cleverly blend into the sparse beauty of the Kalahari. Each has two very large bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and outdoor entertainment area. Future upgrades are on the cards to match the quality of the accommodation with the quality of the game and the area. Larger hunting groups will be well accommodated here. Couples wishing for more luxurious accommodation can be pampered in lodges nearby.

Very nice skinning facilities with large cold rooms provide for the treatment of trophies.

Eastern Cape
Eastern Cape Province of South Africa offers some of the finest plains game hunting. Exciting species such as the Bontebok, Caracal, Vaal Rhebuck, and Blue Duiker makes our Eastern Cape Region all the more attractive. While hunting here non-hunters are able to enjoy a plethora of sightseeing activities, with the famous Garden route just a couple of hours away, Addo Elephant Park on your doorstep as well as endless stretches of breathtaking beaches.

Niassa National Reserve
Situated in the North East of the Niassa National Reserve, this camp boasts over 31 miles of Lugenda River frontage and the same again along the Rovuma River, the latter forming the border between Mozambique and Tanzania.

The camp is situated on the Lugenda riverbank amongst Baobabs, Large Leaf Chestnuts, and Fig trees. The sounds of cheerful birds are heard all day long and replaced by the frequent calls of Lion, Spotted Hyena, and even Leopard at night. At the end of a day’s hunting, you have the luxury of retiring to the comfortable safari canvas tents.

These three en-suite tents each fitted with a queen-size bed, shower, bath, double washbasins, flush toilet, and bidet as well as ceiling fans, the open-air dining and lounge area with a comfortable common area and fireplace all have a spectacular 3-mile view up the Lugenda river.

Electricity is available and generated by our diesel generator. The camp is further equipped with a bank of 12-volt batteries for when the generator is not running. Access to L9 is by charter plane from Pemba. You land on a grass airstrip right at camp.

The terrain consists of Miombo forests varying to Miombo woodland, riverine, granite hills, and grasslands, thereby providing ample suitable habitat for the multiple species naturally indigenous to the reserve.

Cahorra Bassa Chawalo (Tete)
Our areas located on the north bank of Lake Cahorra Bassa and on the Zambezi river totals around 1 700 000 acres and has proven to be world-class when it comes to Nile Crocodile, Leopard, Chobe Bushbuck, Hippo, and several other species.

The North bank of Lake Cahorra Bassa and the Zambezi consists of hilly to mountainous country small ravines, springs, and larger rivers that cut through the terrain.

Nhenda camp located on the lapping water’s edge of Cahora Bassa dam offering the luxury of a small pool to cool off from the tropical heat. Spacious walled rooms with lovely teak beds adorned in mosquito nets are cooler under the thatched roof. The dining area extends off an outdoor fire area to enjoy sipping a sundowner while listening to the sounds of the African wild. Traveling to various locations while hunting is often by boat which provides for a great alternative to bumping along in a Land cruiser. Nhenda is about a 4-hour drive from Tete airport.

Hunting Makuya Conservancy With KWALATA SAFARIS

Makuya conservancy, also known as Makuya Nature Reserve, shares a fenceless border with the Kruger National Park and is about an hour's drive from the Kruger National Park’s Pafuri Gate.

This concession lies in the northeastern corner of Limpopo, formerly known as Venda (a homeland under the Apartheid Regime not far from the border with Zimbabwe, now incorporated into Limpopo).
The reserve comprises 28,500 hectares ( 71 000 acres) and is on a 10-year exclusive lease to Kwalata from the Makuya, Mutele, and Mphaphuli tribes. Hunting on Makuya is an authentic big 5 experience on a truly free-roaming area.

The tented camp in the reserve rests on a mountain top overlooking the river. The reserve forms part of the Limpopo Transfrontier Park still in the throes of formation that includes the Kruger, Makuya, and Letaba Ranch. The perimeters between the parks are fenceless allowing game to roam freely. Makuya shares a 30-mile fenceless boundary with Kruger National Park
The Luvhuvhu River where hippos, elephants, and crocodiles are easy to spot forms a natural divide between Makuya and Kruger. Any game happy to cross it gains access to either. You can easily spot elephants, hippo, buffalo, lions, hyenas, otters, impala, nyala, warthog, and other game.

With a magic wilderness and a non-touristy feel to it as a result. Baobabs pepper the landscape, the Big 5 are readily available within the reserve and the birdlife is abundant – the Luvuvhu-Pafuri region is one of the birding hotspots of South Africa.
Trophy quality on all species can be regarded as exceptional.
Kwalata’s long-term exclusive agreement has also provided the opportunity to not only protect this valuable natural resource but also enhance it. Our involvement in the African community conservation forum, as well as the Kids in the conservation program, will ensure the sustainable utilization as well as the development of this area.

Come and join Kwalata for what should be regarded as the epitome of fair chase quality hunting in South Africa!

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
