Even if you are flying on one ticket if the airlines do not have a baggage agreement they can (not always) make you recheck everything. When I connect from American to Delta they really scratch their heads as to how I didn't have to recheck since they have no baggage agreement. If it is one ticket done by a good travel agent you usually have no problems.
You need to fly these flights on one ticket first of all. The lack of a baggage agreement coupled with the long layover and major ambiguity on firearms permits in Germany means I won't be flying that route.
