Hunt Preparation Starts Now!

I've been stalking some Remington Brass. Finally called a distributor who called back a day later and left a message for me as to who had ordered some recently.
I called the store right away and put two packages on hold.
No one else had any anywhere.

It's become like a new sport in hunting.

Powder, Always looking for the lucky shop that got the shipment in.

I hear you on powders. I was looking for some RL-22 and had gone to just about all the on line sources without finding any except for a couple of 1 lb cans at one. I ordered 4 and they put me on back order. Then a few days later I was talking to a acquaintance 400 miles away and he made a couple of calls for me and found a 5lb jug of it, and since I was headed that way a week later I figured that it would still be there. But the more that I thought about it the more I worried that it wouldn't be there when I arrived and I couldn't get in touch with my friend. I finally found someone that would trust me for $145.00 and had them pick it up for me that night. Primers are all over the place now that I don't need any since I picked up 5,000 a couple of years ago when I found them. I am just glad that I don't need any brass for my rifles.

I'll be glad when all the horders finally quit buying everything that is on the shelf just so that they can have it and try to sell it at outrages prices like what you see on Gunbroker.

Derek if you need Retumbo I may have a line on some. I'm not using it anymore and I think Glenn that you met at the show lets me know when he gets powder in before anyone else gets their mitts on it. Keep me in the loop and I'll let him know what you are after.

Thanks, sounds great Daryl. What I really need is the Vit N570 since I have tons of ammo loaded for my lapua already (retumbo). Still I would like a lb just to hoard for a rainy day :) We will have to see if I am going to be down that way in the next while.

BTW that duiker gets bigger every time I see the pic :) lol

Sorry but that is one powder I don't have a "guy" for. I'll still chat with him and see if he can suggest a place to look.

Spent some quality time in the loading room today.

In addition to loading 100 +P+ 45 Colts for my neighbor in Missouri (265gr Hard Cast and 24 grains of H110) I also loaded up my 79 once-fired cases I had been prepping for final zeroing and hunting in the EC.

I had a really good outing a while back with 74 grains of IMR7828. 3 3-shot groups all under an inch. But the chronograph was telling me the average velocity was 3,100 fps and I knew I was only a half-grain, 40 fps and maybe 10 degrees of temp away from getting to that point where cases would start to stick on extraction (74.5 grains at 60F was iffy...accurate, but a little too hot at 3,140fps).

So, I wanted to find a load that shot well, but was maybe 50fps slower and would give me a little insurance if we got some unusually hot weather in May.

73 grains gave me a nice one-hole, quarter inch group, and 72.5 and 73.5 weren't too shabby either...so today I loaded up 79 rounds with 73 grains and called it good. Average velocity was 3,045 at 10 feet.

This 79 rounds will give me plenty for checking zero and drop before departure, and still allow me to take 50 rounds on the plane.

I still have about 75 practice loads to shoot off the sticks...and if I am lucky enough to shoot all those in the next 3 weeks, I will load up more!

I am new to loading the 300 H&H, so this has been fun trying new powders and loads. As of today's loading, the 300 H&H leapfrogged the 280 Rem to become #17 on my list of most loaded calibers. At 385 rounds, it has a long way to go to catch #1, the 45 ACP, at 8,270 rounds. #1 rifle is 308 at 3,453...so the H&H is quite a newcomer for me.

So far it is proving to be a pretty forgiving rifle/cartridge. It seems to shoot everything I put in it at least passably. I don't think I have see a group from this rifle over 1.5" with any combination.

Well, here they are....the lucky 50 that get to make the trip to Africa.

I call them, the Tootabi 50.

Fourth row back, third from the right, I want to shoot that one. :P Punk::W Shotgun:

It's yours, brother!

For those who don't know, Bill and I will be at Tootabi at the same time and Tim graciously told me I could shoot his .300 H&H months ago.

I guess we were planning an AH.com group hunt before it was cool! ;)

OMG! Bill is going to be there??? Did he steal Nancy's plane ticket?

lol

I figured, but I couldn't resist!

I am going to pack my Pink Tootabi shirt...may even wear it on the flight from Tambo to PE.

I wonder how many looks I will get? :)

I will have mine as well, so they will be used to it by the time you get there. LOL

Hopefully all the weirdos will know by then that the pink shirt does NOT mean we are trolling!

Just checked CIP max OAL is 3.600"
How well do they feed? and can you pull them out by hand??? I would imagine your rifling is seating them when you chamber them? Just looks strange to me.

Shooting a Ruger No1 with a lengthened throat.

Base of bullet is just below junction of neck and shoulder....so yes, well over one caliber.

That Barnes 180 gr TTSX is longer than a 220 gr Partition!

Cool, looked really strange to me. Is it 1 caliber to the base of the bullet or the beginning of the boattail? How come you added the freebore? Just curious, definitely a different rig you have there.

The entire of that long H&H neck is on full diameter bullet. The boat tail is just below the neck.

Lengthened the throat as I knew this was going to be primarily a "long bullet" rifle. Being a falling block, OAL is only restricted by the throat and the need for proper bullet seating/security.

I could never safely get 3,100 fps with 180 gr bullets with the factory throat (or 2,850 with the 220 Partition).

So I get to have an H&H with its beautiful long neck, but don't give up any performance vs say the 300 Win Mag

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.
