Hunt booked with KMG Hunting Safaris for 2019

LiegeRiver, I have hunted with Marius five times (always borrowed a rifle), they have quality loaner rifles should something go wrong.
Darn, missed that about you not taking your own guns. Sorry.

Getting lots of good info here, much appreciated. I Would be most interested in hereing from a Canadian hunter who has been to SA, and travelled through Germany with firearms. As well, the Customs clearing procédures, and trophy shipping steps Would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

Congrats on booking your first safari, good luck and enjoy the journey. Lots of Canadians on here that may be able to help you out. I've never transited through Germany with Firearms so can't help you there.

You definitely made a good move booking your hunt with KMG!
They will treat you like family and the hunting is fantastic.

Canadian guy here -
We only went through Germany / Frankfurt once (was a few years back) - was surprised how what actually happened was much different than what we were told would happen. Have gone to extra effort and expense to avoid it since then. I wouldn't even consider going through Germany without the aid / hire of a company that deals with firearms travel / transport etc. Lots of different Airlines too, and lots of different procedures, not bad if you can get connections with airlines that are partners / alliances (checked right through), but you still have to watch for terminal transfers - that's where your firearms travel agent can really help out.

I expect you could make arrangements to hold your firearms over in customs, but I would definetly want to use a firearms agent for this too. We struggled with communication / language barrier - when we were there (Frankfurt), none of the people in customs and the firearm transfers had any use of the English language

How long ago did you go through Germany, Nosler Guy? From what I've been able to find out, the process is more user friendly these days.

April 2014 - usually is more user freindly - but the airlines (Lufthsansa) threw a few curves at us that time - our flight plan got changed half way across the Atlantic, all of a sudden we were landing in a different terminal, had to reclaim our bags to transfer, rifle came out of transit and the fun began.

It was our first safari, and just like you we thought that it was a simple and painless process, but all it takes is the wrong person at the wrong time and things can get real interesting. Not the usual - but when you travel with firearms you need to be prepared for everything, don't be afraid of it, be cautious and but make darn sure you have all your bases covered..

LiegeRiver, Yup I am a bird gunner, started out on the mud side as a FOO but did most of my time with 4 AD Regt, 27 years so far, although I am at Army HQ now. You will need an EXT 1042 (available on the RCMP website), mostly to get your rifles back into Canada and a SAP 520 on the RSA side.

Just got back from a week at KMG. Though I'm still sorting out notes, pics, videos, thoughts, and emotions in order to do a proper hunt report, I can tell you that KMG and the good folks at Mpunzi Lodge exceeded all expectations. I'm already working the plan for another trip...

Congrats and enjoy the anticipation.

I'm booked for KMG July 2018. Can't wait! Tossing up whether to take my .30/06 or .375 H&H.... Bushbuck to Eland on the list....

The 375 is a great caliber. Very little collateral damage, and a very dramatic effect on the animal. Bu, I am thinking that the bushbuck may be in difficult terrain. My 375 is not great for the hilly stuff as it weighs more than my 30-06.

Good point Pheroze. My A-Bolt .30/06 is much lighter than my Sako .375... Hmmm...

Take them both Blacks, no more hassle with two.
@LiegeRiver, if you want to take a spare rifle take the one you will enjoy or trust the most.

Congrats on the booking with KMG you can't go wrong with Marius. Having just got back from hunting with him and using his 308 it is a great rifle and I would not hesitate to use it again. Even though the bolt is on the wrong side (dang right handed people ) hoping to be back booking with him in 2020

Take both. I took a Ruger **NOT**PERMITTED** Scout in .308 and Ruger M77 African in .375 Ruger...both fit nicely in a Pelican 1750 case. It turned out to be fortunate that I had two, as my hunting buddy's rifle didn't make it onto the plane in Atlanta. He'd shot both my rifles before and was packing the same .308 ammo I took (Hornady Precision Hunter 178 grain ELD-X), so it was not problem for him to borrow one of my rifles until his arrived.

I'm there from July 1 mate. I'll leave a couple for you ;)

Tuffpak 1050- You pack it with padded soft cases and clothes and it is almost indestructible. You can get upto 4 guns but I only carry 2 and it does not look like a gun case. You can also use it for other things when traveling.

I looked at them. I really like this case, but I couldn’t get it up to Canada.

I bought one online and had it shipped. I think that was 5 years ago. It was a good decision as I think they are great.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
