Fellow Hunters - I'm off to Hungary in September for the second week of the stag rut. I've been before to hunt roebuck and boar, but this is my first time for stag, and my first time in the area just above Croatia and Pecs. Much appreciate any insights from anyone who has gone before. I have a long-standing relationship with the outfitter, but I highly value the experience and advise of this community. Thanks / R

Have a great hunt! A number of us hunted Romania last year with outstanding results. I can’t wait to hear how your hunt in Hungary goes.

The South of Hungary close to the border to croatia is prime Red Stag area. Baranya, Smogny and Zala is normaly the regions that produce the biggest red deer trophys in Hungary.

I was in the region Baranya (Boly) in september of 2022 and got the trophy of my dreams.
an 14,74 kg 261,44 cic stag. I think that its currently ranks as the 7th biggest stag in Hungary.

As shown there was a copy made of the tropy that has been at Fehova huntingfair and now at the hunting exibit in the Agricultural museum in Budapest

The hunt will be an experiance of a lifetime for you, roaring stags is magical.

@Haugis

I would love to read your report of this hunt, if you ever make it!
Congrats!

Hello Rimbaud- if you plan to hunt stags in Hungary it depends what you are looking for. If you are looking for strong stags- for me trophies from 10kg upwards, there are some areas where to go.
I would recomend the SEFAG , ZALA ERDÖ, BOLY maybe GEMENCE ( this are special landscape- on the river Danube, border to Croatia and Serbia, traditional hunting castle Karapancsa )-I‘ll be hunting there first half of September for one week.
To get an old and strong stag is not so easy anymore in Hungary,most of agricultural areas are private now and fenced, so the hunting territories had to reduce game population in the last decade. But still real good choice.

Are they high fence or free range?

In some areas you have also high fenced hunting areas, specially for wild boar.

Fellow hunters - I returned from Hungary late last night. Pictured below is my stag that was shot about an hour north of Vizvar, a small town that is along the Croatian border. I do not have final measurements but my guides think the stag will register about 230 CIC points, and rank as one of the largest taken this year in Hungary, and even Europe. I hope the pictures capture the specialness of this monarch. It was an honor to watch him for as long as I did and to hear him roar and prance about. Waidmanns Heil.

Was this bull taken in the evening or early in the morning?

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
