If you go on a hunting trip in Africa and you hunt quite a few animals (maybe a few of the big five) how much would it usually round out to? Like what would the price range?
Hi Derial D.
Welcome to AH, Very sound question to be asking.
Plus from your post you are looking at total costs.
We have to consider the following countries with your broad question.
Tanzania ~ Mozambique ~ Namibia - Zambia ~ Zimbabwe & South Africa are the ones that you could consider at this time.
Tanzania we are looking at about $80,000 or more for 2 or 3 big five trophy animals, however you will be able to have 2 CB on license.
Mozambique is looking like some trouble and you need to be careful who you book with. however of the big 5, lion - leopard and cape buffalo are available.
Namibia has options and again the travel to the strip will add to the expense, however elephant, lion, leopard and cape buffalo, plus hippo and croc are available. You will need to book early to see if there are quota available for what you are looking for.
Zambia - is scheduled to reopen next year and there will be some great lion hunting. They also have leopard, cape buffalo and elephant and again booking and securing quota will be the hard part.
Zimbabwe - Has some great cape buffalo, leopards and lions book with a reputable firm. Elephant is off the book now, however that may change for next year.
South Africa has all the big 5 and if you book with the right company or companies you should be able to get great trophy's.
Cost wise ~ you have to look at what you can afford to have a great safari experience. If money was not issue, i would consider Tanzania, hands down.
1. Air fare - approximately $2,000 to $2,500 this will depend on where you are flying out of and what country you chose to go hunting in.
1a. bush airfare - can be upwards of $12,000 if you need a flight into the bush. Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia and possible Zambia.
2. PH costs - approximately $3,000 to $4,500 for 10 day plains game safari - this cost is again depending on the length of your safari and who you book with.
3. PH cost - To book a big 5 package for say leopard and cape buffalo you are looking at a 14 day safari and $14,000 or more in PH fees.
4. Trophy costs - This is the hard part as the cost will be different for the African countries.
Cape Buffalo from $4,500 to $12,000 or more
Leopard from $4,500 to $10,000 or more - bait animals included some places and others you pay the going rate for trophy animals for bait.
5. Large Plains game look at $6,000 this will get you 3 to 4 trophy's, not counting sable or roan
6 Small plains game look at $3,000 this will get you 6 to 7 trophy's.
