That's definitely a fine looking rifle! I like the dark look to it. It definitely is special.
What's going on with the mounts? Covers the action good deal. What scope are you looking to mount?

Might look it young Mr Smith but remember it's a fair size hole down the middle.
If it was un 22 cal you would need a golf buggy to take it out.

Exactly. People over look the Whelen's best attribute when say hunting big bears the Whelen has a higher round count in the magazine in a handy package

I shouldn't matter if you have a single shot or a 20 round mag. We should be trying to make that first shot count and do the job. If you need a lot more shots you haven't done the job properly.

Thank you for complimenting my rifle. I think the black along with the stainless steel looks really nice. The mounts came with the rifle, unfortunately. But since the Savage action ejects the cases to the right, the extra that overlaps won’t be a problem. The scope that came with it is a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40mm BDC. I’m thinking on using that, or a Burris Droptine 3-9x40mm Ballistic Plex Reticle.
E.R. Shaw considers the barrel a magnum contour, but I’d hate to see what a bull barrel looks like from them, or even the varmint barrel contour.
The guy I got the rifle from jammed a screw in on the right side and tried using a small nut to lock the scope into place and failed.
Unfortunately, I didn’t catch this when I traded a rifle with him until it was too late. Now I’m try to get that buggered screw out, and replace it with a proper one so I can use the rings for t either scope.

Hawk, I have that same scope on my Whelen. No complaints. Sounds like you might need to get a set of rings, or hopefully find one in a "scrap bin" at your local gun store.

I would have already replaced the bases, if it weren’t for someone stripping the screw heads to a nice small circular hole, and I can neither unscrew, or get a hex key in to try and loosen. Ugh!

Which scope is it exactly that you have on yours? I have 2 that I can put on.
But if you have experience with one of them, then I just may put it on for mine, too.

I'm thinking heat is also going to be needed here. It's starting to smell like loctite red. Heat the screws up and easy out. The bases should protect the receiver.

So to change the subject, a few years ago I bought a Winchester Model 88 in 35/284, the problem was I was very limited to the bullets I could use, basically Hornady 200 grain Interlocks. Was not really satisfied. Fast forward 3 years I bought a couple of Vanguards in 30-06 with the Bones stock cheap. Had a 284 and a 35/284 built on them so I could take advantage of the heavier Bullet weights. Both rifles are fine shooters, and I’m shooting the 35/284 as fast as my 35 Whelan. This afternoon my son and I are going out after Elk guess what I’m carrying.

The 35/284 is just a short action Whelen and similar to the 350 rem mag.
Using it in Sn 06 length action allows you to seat the bullets way out to take advantage of the case capacity. I hope you had the chamber long throated to take advantage of this.

Don’t have my data handy but I’m using Reloader 15 for around if I recall right 2650 FPS with a 225 Gr Accubond

Your just not trying hard enough Spook.
You should be able to get at least 3400fps !
