How many here have successfully hunted the Big 5?

A better picture of the shot .

I turn 40 this year, I really wished I got after it on mountain hunts when I was younger. Not to mention how much they have gone up in price.

40 ! …..oh to be young again. I had my first sheep hunt in my late 50’s. I’m now in my mid 60’s and have put off Africa until I’m too old for the hills.

Why not both? I just hit the big 60 and decided I need to knock out a couple of sheep hunts before it’s too late . Bonus getting in shape for them . Elephant hunt in May , Desert sheep in late October, then Marco Polo next fall.
I decided I want no regrets no more time to put them off.

It is all about balance, lol one mountain hunt and one African hunt a year, till I am too old to go!

If I was married to Gina Rhinehart I’d be doing way more than what you suggest. But, unfortunately I’m not.

I guess you’re right. I’m trying to balance fitness with finances. After each trip I reassess. I’m off hunting public land chamois and red in a few days. When I recover from that trip I’ll check out the knees and finances and reassess my priorities. .

Haven't the Namibian's quietly been selling those for $150,000 when nobody bites at the $400k?
Good question. There is certainly much mystery surrounding rhino and the hunts available.

Haha well my daughter is getting married this summer as well so there’s that. She wanted a smaller wedding but her fiancé decided he wanted a bigger wedding with seven groomsmen! Now she had to match that with seven bridesmaids. Now everyone under the sun is invited!
Congratulations with the upcoming marriage of your daughter. That is a wise investment.

Big hello! Finally joined the AH community. I’ve google searched and scanned posts over the years but never jumped in .

I have completed big 5 and dangerous 7 as well as helped several of my kids and beautiful wife start their DG collection. No better way to connect and reconnect with family than a nice long dangerous game safari . Most everything dangerous shot in Zimbabwe. We have been there 5 times The first was a little hairy was in 2006 with rampant inflation and farms still being taken . We went for my sons high school graduation . He shot a leopard and buffalo. I shot the elephant I chose for my heading beautiful bull 70 plus pounds a side 76 and 78 inches and very symmetrical.

My wife and I are heading back close to where are first Zim Safari was in May.
Sengwe block we are both hunting the biggest elephant we can find and she is taking her second try for leopard. She had a great opportunity in Tanzania last year it just didn’t quite work out !

Glad to be a part of your group!

Welcome to AH! And congratulations on all the fantastic hunts and trophies you've taken.

Please tell us about the lion.

I’ve hunted all 5 of the Big 5, however I was unsuccessful on Leopard. I hope to rectify this in the very near future.

To add to this, I’ve also completed 8 of the Tiny 10 and am lacking Red Duiker & Suni. Both of which will be the primary targets for my 2026 hunt in Coutada 11 with Zambeze Delta Safaris

Thanks!

The lion was actually part of an amazing family trip . During Covid as I’m sure you know outfitters were struggling. So I found out through a state side company I have used to book hunts Global Hunting Resources that a South African company was raising funds by raffling off 4 amazing packages. Well I never win anything so decided I would like to donate to the cause. Somehow I ended up winning! I took my wife son his wife my stepson and his girlfriend at the time now wife .

The package included rhino dart and a male and female lion among others . We ended up shooting way over the allocated hunt for two reasons. We wanted to help out or PH and the farms he was representing. His own had burned up the previous year ! Killing most of his animals including the rhino I was going to hunt .

We ended up taking two Buff my wife shooting an old 47” bull. Darted my rhino and then went north to the kalahari for lion we took three my stepson shot a male my wife shot a female and I shot the one pictured.

We saw two males together so we had my stepson shoot first . He took the shot and all hell broke loose ! Roaring lions zig zagging around I took a shot with my double but looking at the video thought he was broadside when he was actually facing me brush grass all deceiving my aging eyes . My son in law hit the first lion hard so he was able to put two more into him.
We took pictures and were off to look for mine wasn’t sure I hit him ( I didn’t ) . We started tracking him as we got closer he took off I took a leading shot and hit him !
A shot I wouldn’t have taking if I knew he was uninjured , we continued to follow him and I was able to put in the final shot.

It was very exciting and enjoyed the hunt but really want a wild lion . My Zim PH for life ( since he saved my ass ) is currently looking one . A pic of my wife’s beautiful Bull to follow.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
