Where the heck were you hunting? Do es he have a brother?
Actually was using two different hunts to illustrate the two extremes - the bushbuck hunt was in the Limpopo - passed a average ram the first morning, then spent the next eight days trying to find a better one, that project ate up most of the hunt.
The Kudu hunt was a free range hunt in the Kalihari in Namibia, the outfitter was telling us how tough a hunt it was going to be, we were hunting on the back end of a rabies outbreak in an area that just has pockets of Kudu habitat. However the kudu rut was just kicking in, and the camp was in a small, group of mountains that always holds a good population of kudu cows. Old Jan said they hadn't seen any good bulls around, but with the rut anything could happen. It was still pretty dark as were just leaving the compound and were closing the gate, when I spotted a few cows, a second later Franz spotted the bull as he slipped over the ridge. We scrambled over there and completely lucked out, he stopped up on the slope just over the crest. We dropped him within a rifle shot of camp before the sun was even up - the luckiest break of my hunting career.
And yes he did have a brother - the next year a 14 year old girl shot a 62 inch bull just down the ridge - the first animal she ever shot and the biggest ever taken off of the ranch ...
