Hiking Rifle cartridges

Was at the range working up a load for my friends little hiking rifle today.
It started as a 20 inch Howa Mini in 6.5 Grendel, removed the mag with the flush metal, got a carbon fibre stock and then had the barrel profile turned down a lot thinner, blued again and threaded.
Its lighter than any other rifle I have ever carried. And its a pussycat to shoot. Have a load that shoots a 120gr Rhino solid shank nearly 2400fps and then working on a 100gr Partition around 2700fps for longer shots.

I now have what I think is a good, lightweight hunting rifle... a Ruger No. 1, 25-'06 with a 25" barrel. it's just 42" long and weighs 7lbs. 15 oz. Light enough to carry, heavy enough to shoot accurately.

My favorite walking around on the lease (with no defined purpose) firearm is my Krieghoff dreiling in 16 bore x 16 bore over 7x57R.

Second favorite would be my Merkel K3 in 30-06.

Safe shooting!

Just took a kimber adirondak to South Africa (.308)… it had no problem taking everything from springbok to zebra…

At less than 6lbs with a swaro optic mounted.. and an OAL of 37”… it made just about a perfect walk around all day rifle…

My Rem 600 Mohawk in 308 with a bell and carlson stock is slightly heavier.. but follows the same concept as the kimber… I’d be happy to hike around all day with it as well

Has everyone forgot their history? How about the original 6.5 (100 years before the 6.5 creedmore) 1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5 x 54 ms. Was used by WDM Bell.
Go back to page 5, and see posts 99 and 100. Then again, anything worth doing is worth overdoing, so make mine an M1910 carbine. You know... just in case you bump into Sasquatch, or something.

Bansner ultimate ovis in 264 WSM. 23" whole package is just over 6 lb and deadly accurate under a thousand yards. A mountain rifle/cartridge combo you could shoot bench rest with. 3,250-3,400 fps (it outshoots the 26 Nos in a smaller package and on the heels of a much larger 6.5-300 Wby.) With heavy, high SD bullets (160/.310) you could take anything you like on Earth (as our forefathers did with less case.) Have taken everything from Giraffe on down but one PH liked it so much he suggested I bring it along for Buff some other time. Just phenomenal for everything in NA (excepting the biggest bears-it'd work, but def not my 1st choice.) Took aoudad at 720 yds and less, whitetails <500 yds (in heavy winds/snows), varmints <550 yds, and longest shot I had to take in Africa was a rock hyrax at 400 yds ('couldn't resist as it reminded me of woodchucks at home.) This is the Needmore's antichrist! *I've shot it so much (1,000s rounds) it's time to have Mark re-barrel it...(opened up to 1" groups in recent times-up from 1-hole.)

I put one of those on my new bucket list. I have a 1905 in 9x56. I would actually prefer the 1910 over the 1903 so I must be a medium bore looney.

22’,26” makes no difference to me that I’ve ever noticed or cared to notice. It’s somewhat negligible. Okay, so lighter rifles with shorter barrels make for easier mountain climbing and I suppose when making your way through brush. Again, nothing I’ve ever noticed the difference of. Either your in shape for the hunt or your not. Best to let millennials and later generations worry about such, I’d imagine that type of concern is right up their alley. And of course companies marketing new products no one really needs. lol

Funny, not long ago I posted something similar in response to a smaller caliber selection on dangerous game. Or something on those lines. My post in response was: ever heard of Karamojo Bell? I’m from an old school mindset that that was raised you weren’t allowed to say something stupid. My point is , in today’s world you see so many discussions and comments that -especially on these forums- are negligible. I try to engage on these forums in a courteous manner, but sometimes reading through some meaningless, negligible discussions is outright nonsense. Lol. Sorry I couldn’t help myself. Too many folks buy into the bulls@$t and is indicative of lining up like sheep to get slaughtered. Many so willing to conform to others telling them what to do. Sad but true.

Sad but true. Too many believe the drivel shoveled out by the bought and paid for gun rags. Anyone with any hunting experience will know that if a cartridge has been around for over a hundred years it is because it works. If you feel the need to shoot over 300 yards to take game you are working on the wrong part of your skill set. The newer generations don’t have the patience to learn how to stalk game and study their habits. Sad state of affairs.

The one that fills the bill for me is a Husqvarna 4100 in .30'06. Light and accurate, there's nothing in my hunting area it can't handle. BTW, this is probably the ugliest coyote ever taken!

That one's mangier, but a buddy shot one literally covered in dog ticks--almost felt like a favor to shoot him...

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
