It’s a great story how we have whitetails. In 1934 Finnish immigrants from Minnesota sent 7 whitetails to Finland by ship that where captured in Virginia. 5 survived the trip and where placed in a fenced enclosure of 3.5 hectares. They thrived and had offspring in 1937. 1938 a storm knocked down a tree on the fence and the deer escaped. In 1948 there where conserns the deer population was too inbred and an additional 6 where flown in from the US. Today there are about 250.000 deer and 40.000 shot.Hello from Alaska. I'm confused though. Are you able to hunt whitetails in Finland or did you do that in North America?
Good question. All the exciting hunt reports on this site, how could i not go to Africa? 3-7 years old i lived in SA, Durban. I remember we had this beatiful zebra rug, i have to have one.Welcome to AH @MooseIsLoose ! I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. What gave you the idea to go on a safari to Africa?
That is a genuinely cool story ! Have they now been accepted by the greens to be a non-invasive species, and not hunted to extinction? It’s a great story how we have whitetails. Well i’m a finn so i have to use sakos . I have a sako finnfire 22lr. Sako 85 stainless synthetic 6.5x55. Sako L61R finnbear 30-06 and a british browning 12/76. I do not reload, have found the new sako powerhead blade factory loaded bullets to work very well with both rifles so i’m going with them for now. The Africa hunt will be a PG hunt so i will take my 30-06 with me. I have my eye on a beatiful sako safari 338 win mag that i might get.Welcome aboard MooseIsLoose, Please tell us a little more about yourself as a hunter. Things like what kind and caliber rifles you own do you reload. are you planning to take one of your rifles to Africa or rent one from your Outfitter?
The greens in Finland have only a 8% support and thank god they are not the idiots that germany have that are anti nuclear power. Finland is over 10x bigger than Belgium with a population of 5.5mil so alot of space for the deer. We have invasive species like raccoon dogs and mink that are bad for grouse and other birds. That is a genuinely cool story ! I wish we could do the same with fallow deer, muntjak and chinese waterdeer here in Belgium. It would make for a greater variety of species to observe and eat
