Hi from Austria (no - not the island with "Ruuhs" jumping around)

How would you compare the use of a "dot" i.e. Aimpoint vs a RMR. What would you consider to be the pros and cons of each?

What size "dot" would you recommend for a Dangerous Game rifle knowing that rapid target acquisition will likely be the key to saving your bacon?

Good question - but easy answer!

You ONLY should use a dot - no fuzzy triangles, donuts around dot or other "new age" stuff - K.I.S.S. principle counts here, cause fuzzy things draw your focus to the reticle and not to the vitals of your quarry. The DOT ONLY works with your brain - not against. Some people tell me, that the cant see the dot sharp (i.e. like a star or kind of that) - if you focus on the dot, this will happen to ~ 50 % of people (me to), but you dont want to hit the dot - you want to hit the target, so look on your target. It is called "astigmatism" feel free to google it, there is a nice short good thing about on Wikipedia. Will not affect your aiming, when done right.

Dot size doesnt really matter - I prefer a 2 MOA dot, cause sometimes i shoot small targets at "far" distances. A 4 MOA dot will serve you perfectly for bigger species and shorter ranges.

"Target aquisition" is a function of rifle fitting - you focus on your target while bringing up (mounting) your gun - you never loose focus of target. With a fitting rifle it will naturally center the dot on your focus point.

"Saving your bacon" belongs to the "art of manliness" - if you cant manage to save your bacon, Darwin will laugh from his grave. On some point in our life we all will meet our fate - but if hunting "DANGEROUS GAME" turns out not to be dangerous, it will loose its thrill. Maybe then it should be called "EXPENSIVE GAME" or just "GAME".

Welcome and enjoy. Yes Australia is an island and a continent the same size as the USA.

Welcome to AH, Karl!

Hey Doc - some time ago in Syria I was aksed if Austria is "this island with big hopping rats", so there are people... you know!

Some people also think you drive on the left side of road, cause you are on the south side of equator.

We do drive on left.

Welcome to AH! Nice to have you as part of our community, really looking forward to your input.

Welcome to AH Karl!
Glad you joined in.

Nice to have you Gents (and Ladys) also here! Really can recommend your optics lineup for "magnified work"! I like the Magnus line. And I heard you have a nice factory hunting area in Germany.

If someone is interested in a "January driven boar Safari" in Europe pls feel free to contact me - if I get enough response, I create a special thread - otherwise info via PM! At the moment I'm organizing a hunt for around 15 guns. This will be free landscape - NO CANNED SHOOTING!

Roughly 2 or 3 days of hunting, nice accommodation, 25-30 boars per day with 10-15 hunters. Main languages are English and German, so nobody is left alone with his thoughts. If demand is there, I will organize a training day in live fire shooting cinema. Will give tips and guidelines how to hit your target on nearly every speed and on distances you never thought of.

Not many hunters from overseas tried this kind of hunting, but everyone who did will come again. Last year I hunted together with Olivia and Tom O. for driven boar.

The nice thing is, that everyone can afford this.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.

Have twice tried to post something that your site canned as "SPAM" or some problem.. "Contact the Administrator"... Not sure why even the "Contact" button would not send my comment so you only received my query but not the content in question. I'll see if I can get it to you this way... NOPE I use a VPN and perhaps that is causing me grief...
