Heym 470

Thank you Everyone, I'm over the moon!

She is a little skinny (9,9lb) and a bit short... Will first extend the LOP to 14,75" (the same as my shotguns) and potentially later add some weight if she hits too hard.

If all goes well, this gun's first kill will be a bull elephant, however I will first need to get to know her a bit and sort out the reloads.
First, congratulations on acquiring a really handsome rifle.

I do have a couple of questions if you will oblige me. It looks new so my first question is, did you order the rifle or get it second hand ? My next couple of questions only apply if you ordered the rifle yourself. When you made the order, did they measure you for your personal dimensions? When did you order it and how long was your "wait time" ?

Again, congratulations and I hope you get many years of enjoyment using it.

I am based in South Africa and bought it from a local shop, so I unfortunately had no say in stock dimensions or other details. Given what I've seen here on AH regarding waiting periods for Heym rifles, I would follow the same route again.

I originally ordered a Krieghoff Big Five from a local importer, however after two years of waiting I cancelled the order as he still doesn't have the import permit yet. This was not Krieghoff's fault... I was fortunate to find this rifle in stock, closed my eyes and hit the "pay" button. This rifle was bought and licensed during the time it took to go through the legal process in order to get a refund. A warning to all SA Krieghoff enthusiasts, there are only two importers, be careful with which one you place your order.

If I can chirp in here, I think South Africa must be one of the few place on earth where there are usually Heym rifles in stock. The downside is obviously they are all ‘standard’ size. I happen to fit the mould, being 180cm tall and an average length neck, but I could do with a tad more castoff, say 10mm. I am just wondering if it wouldn’t be prudent for double manufacturers to fit an adjustable recoil pad? I know, it isn't the done thing, but all doubles find new owners eventually.

I really wish we had gunsmiths who can bend stocks like they do in the UK. Best we can do is an adjustable cheek piece, which will destroy the looks of a double...

Bending a Heym's stock is unfortunately not a viable proposition. They have through-bolts.
I found that a red dot, very low profile, solved my offset issues and I couldn’t be happier. If you need to extend the length an adjustable base may be the answer to everything. I don’t think it would look bad, especially if the metalwork parts were black.

I panicked when I saw this post. Hoping it wasn’t for sale.

Congrats. What a beautiful rifle.
Not that I don’t love the well adorned ones also.

But for a hunter, there is a different style of simplicity and functionality. And yours fits that perfectly. My dream would be one similar with color case hardened action.

Limbsaver's Nitro line of recoil pads are 1 1/2" which generally extends length of pull over normal 1" thick pads, depending upon what pad it came with.

The nitro line is made for these bigger Africa calibers, I have one on my 458 lott, I went to a hydraulic, expensive pad, then went back to the Limbsaver Nitro, no doubt I like it better.

So I do recommend them, especially when someone needs some extra length of pull as they add that too.

Congrats on the firearm.

Kevin, if you don't mind, what is "castoff"?
Thanks if you can ..

Hi Daniel, it is the amount that the butt and the cheek contact of the stock is offset from the axis of the barrels. On a right hand rifle it is to the right. It is there to bring your eye into better alignment with the sight axis since the shoulder position is off to the right. It is very subjective, which is why I wonder if it wouldn’t be easier to just have an adjustable butt piece. It of course will only solve the position in the shoulder, not the cheek contact alignment, the only cure for that is a bent stock, or an adjustable cheek piece too. I concede that I am no expert in these things, so please all you fundi’s jump in.

Cast On: stock made for a left-hander, i.e. the stock and comb bends ever so slightly to the left and if the stock has a cheekpiece, it will be on the right-hand side of the butt. Cast Off is the reverse of this.

Thank you, both. Novice/inexperience question, but well clarified.
I looked back @ the dimensions, specifications on a build. Cast .27

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
