Help with my bow hunting setup for Plains Game

DM,
What was your draw weight, draw length, total arrow weight, and make of arrow shaft? I assume you are shooting a significant poundage and draw length to get enough energy for that kind of penetration? No issues with those Rages bending ferrules, breaking blades, or deflecting?

Easton Axis 340 9.5GPI carbon arrows rage extreme broadheads 29 inch Think Draw weight was 76lb. have video of impala shot from 28yds looking right at me and arrow was hitting dirt after pass through before he moved. Gemsbuck from 46yards quartering shot hit and broke opposite leg at shoulder. I re used some broadheads on little stuff like mongoose and guinnie, also Franklin grouse but basically disposable after shooting in my mind. I was worried about the losing energy with these tough animals but after shooting the rig I did I am pretty confident in the set up. Shot a Wildabeast from 25yds right on verge of quartering too far went for far shoulder and shattered it while cutting a giant swath through everything inbetween. He ran about 30 yards and I watched those guys take some hard hits from rifle hunters and run for a long way. I brought some Muzzy broadheads from the info from the blogs here and the PH I went with recommended them at the time. He changed his mind by the time I got to SA after a hunter he takes yearly took like 50 animals all with his bow and all with Rage. They have a nice practice tip that flies very close to the real heads so the confidence is there. I think the speed and shot placement is so important and you seem to have more time in Africa than say hunting whitetails to shoot. I learned so much there like how important wind direction really is,tough to hunt whitetail in NH after that.

Wow! holy crap! 20 for 20 is a pretty amazing stat for bowhunting.... Congrats!
That kind of success with a Rage, or any expandable is pretty atypical on African plainsgame....Just for my own knowledge, can you share your bow & arrow set-up? Also, how many of those shots were pass-throughs? Thanks.

Very cool......I'm am interested in the set-up as well. What did the exit holes look like? If you didn't get pass-throughs, how much arrow penetration?

That is exit on Kudu shot was 30 yards. Gemsbuck that is entry hit far left shoulder shattered bones in opposite leg/shoulder 46yards.

UPDATE: Besides my Synergy, I'll take my Impulse 34 too. At 73 # and use it for Eland and Zebra. I´m building a good arrow for that purpose , thinking about 700 grains using FMJ Dangerous Game .

That will get the job done.

700 grains is a bit over kill for eland and zebra imo. My setup is 512 grains total at 292 fps and that's around 97 lbs/ ke. I'm not against a heavy arrow, I have a build pushing 800 grains, but I think you could add some needed FPS to your setup by shaving weight versus going too heavy.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
