Sorry to hear your hunt left you wanting a little more. I completely understand your sentiments about longing for a little more adventure like you read about, and even felt a little of the same.Sorry for the late response but I went to South Africa, in the Greater Kruger area. The main animals I targeted were a hippo and a kudu but we also hunted porcupine, baboon, and warthog. The hunt was a success as I harvested all five of these animals and all (except the warthog) were fantastic trophy sized animals but I'm sorry to say I walked away feeling a little disappointed in the experience. I think the main reason for that is because I was hoping to have a big adventure like I'd read so much about but I spent my time there hunting on a working farm 15 minutes outside of town where guys were picking oranges or driving tractors around the whole time I was hunting so there was no sense of adventure or wilderness whatsoever. I also shot the kudu, warthog, and porcupine from the truck. I was hoping to hunt the hippo on land too but it was so cold the week I was there, the hippos didn't leave the water at all during the day and my PH said we couldn't hunt them at night for some reason I can't remember. I consider myself blessed to have been able to harvest great trophy quality animals and that the hunt went smoothly but the trip didn't satisfy my want for adventure or leave a lasting impression on me. But I learned a lot on the trip and now I know I'll either have to book a dangerous game hunt in South Africa or a hunt in Zimbabwe/Zambia/Namibia to get that wilderness experience I'm looking for and I'm thrilled at the prospect.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes!
South Africa was my first experience and it hooked me because of the diversity and numbers of game animals rather than the adventure. Since hunting in South Africa, I’ve now expanded to Namibia, and Zimbabwe. While I’ll definitely return to South Africa again, it’s Zim I’ve enjoyed the most so far. Zim now has me now going deeper down the rabbit hole looking at Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, and West Africa. It has me considering 1 trip every couple of years instead of an annual trip to get more of wild Africa.
Dry Land Hippo is personally on my list as well. I passed on a pretty decent bull in Zim this year because he was in the water. I don’t think I’ll shoot one in the water unless it’s for bait or he’s a once in a lifetime bull. With that said as I’ve learned more about African hunting, Hippo and Croc are 2 animals I likely wouldn't hunt in South Africa except for a couple of places.
Good luck on your future hunts look forward to reading about them
