Hello from the Bitterroot Valley Montana

Howdy folks, been lurking for quite awhile and finally made an account. I live in western Montana and am an avid hunter & shooter. Took the plunge yesterday and put a deposit on a hunt in Botswana. Hope to learn a lot here!
Hey neighbor,

I have a vacation place in Darby... Welcome!

Hi Roughneck, welcome! I looked at a job in Hamilton before ending up here in Idaho. When will you be hunting Botswana? What species?

I will be hunting Botswana June 2026 with a good friend of mine who has been over 30 times. Species I am hunting are Kudu, Eland, Gemsbuck Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Impala, Springbuck Springbok, Warthog, Waterbuck, Wildebeest, Zebra. It’s an 8 day hunt and I am getting geared up. I normally hunt with a 270wsm, 35 Whelen or a 45/70. Picked up a few big bores this week and plan on spending some time with each to see what fits me the best and I shoot the best.

Hamilton is a nice town definitely gotten way busier in the 8 years I have lived here. Moved down from Alaska

Welcome, Roughneck! This place is great to discuss and learn more about Africa. You’re going to enjoy a fantastic time in Botswana, that’s a nice group of animals and that 35 Whelen will be perfect for all of them.

Not to worry, you’ll be going back. From your description it sounds like you’re possibly going with Tholo Safaris? That’s pretty closely matches their 8-day package. If not Tholo, I’d be interested to know which company.

Botswana is a wonderful place for a first safari. Or tenth!

welcome, i go thru stevensville on my way to lake dorshak

I booked through WTA and honestly not sure the outfitter but my friend who has been many times only hunts with this particular PH and if I remember correctly his name is Werner. Yeah I have a feeling this won’t be my only trip. Honestly been wanting to go forever just was afraid to travel over there

The travel isn’t that bad. What airline are you flying?

Welcome to the forum, sounds like it might be Bokomoso you are hunting with if it is Werner. Have a great time and write us up a hunt report when you return

I absolutely will do a hunt report. I have never been on a guided hunt before so it will be an experience all around. I believer you are correct that it is Bokomoso. Thank you

Welcome to AH. You’ve come to the right place to learn about hunting Africa. The “Search” feature is a big asset. If you can’t find what you want there, there are so many with experience, willing to answer your questions.

Bokomoso also has a very good reputation, you’ll be in good hands on a good place.

You are in for a great safari. I hunted with Werner at Bokamoso on my 4th African safari. He and his wife Bronwyn run a great camp. Some Great Plains game options to hunt. I was also fortunate to see elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah on the property. The kudu and eland are abundant and above average. As this is your first trip to Africa I would highly suggest using a qualified travel agent. I have used Gracy and Travel with Guns. Anyone can book airfare but these guys really pay off when you have an unexpected problem. On my travels to Bokamoso Delta/KLM didn’t get my rifle on the plane. Having an agent who is experienced in this issue took all the stress off me and made arrangements to have my rifled delivered to camp by the end of day1. Well worth the few extra dollars in commission. Also some advise I received before my first safari and that was expect something won’t go as planned. This is Africa. As they say “make a plan” and go forward. Have a great trip. I am jealous to relive that first safari excitement.

:S Welcome:

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris

Hello:
I’ll take the .375 Whitworth for $1,150 if the deal falls through.
Thanks .
