Hello From Canada

Hi,
Brickburn I think its unfortunate that the current government decided to Ban the Grizzly hunts, they seem to ignore the science behind there own research and go with publics emotional opinions not based on research or scientific opinion.
Few people were asking if I've ever hunted in Africa, I've never been or hunted there it would be my first trip so really inexperienced.
I don't own any big Game Rifles for Africa I shoot a 30/06, and 9.3 x 62 here. Im also deciding on whether going to SA or Namibia or what do most people hunt game ranches or fair chase like here in Vancouver so if anyone has any advice or recommendation's please let me know. Thanks

Abby, we all concur with your opinion of B.C. banning Grizzly bear hunts. Your 9.3 x 62 is all you need for African Plains Game. As a back up rifle I would also take your 30-06 as it too is widely recognized as a very PG capable caliber. As far as free range or high fence you need to answer that for yourself. My sons and I went in 2016, we chose high fence. But you need to realize that most of SA's high fence operations are concessions of 10,000 acres or more. In other words a little over 15 square miles. If you think about high fence as an effort to keep the poachers out rather than some way to keep the animals contained the idea becomes a lot more palatable. While there are a lot of outfitters to choose from, not all receive "top billing" from their clients. The outfitters that are sponsors of AH are vetted on these pages on an almost daily basis. One would do well to heed their recommendations. After spending many hours reading current and previous hunting posts you need to decide on what species you wish to hunt. Then take a look at the "packages" that the various outfitters have to offer as they are usually less expensive. Most of us make a spread sheet to help organize our hunt. Ours had a number of topics that included in no particular order the animals we wanted to hunt, travel costs, insurances, inoculations, things we needed (or wanted) to purchase etc. Another thing that you will have to do is get acquainted with shooting sticks and their use. While rather uncommon in North America most outfitters expect if not require them to be used. Thorough planning takes a lot of time but will all but preclude those last minute surprises that can ruin a hunt.

Remember we are all here to help.

Abby nothing wrong with a 9.3 x62 for Plains game. Here's my Steyr 9.3x62 with its work done.

Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone new member to the forum. I've never hunted in Africa before but was thinking about maybe planning a hunt there in 2018 since I've heard good things from other hunters. I was hoping get some help and advice from the forum. I'm thinking of a Elephant or Rhino hunt in Namibia or South Africa but I'm open to suggestions, I wanted to travel with my family and have young kids so wanted to go with a Outfitter that could accommodate that and be comfortable for them if possible.
Thanks
Abby

Hi Abby
Welcome to the site. Please feel free to contact me privately for information re the proposed hunts.
Just a note, if yo u have never hunted in Africa, it may be hard to obtain a permit to hunt a Rhino as the first opf your big 5 animals. Elephant will not be a problem though
Good Luck with your quest.

Welcome to AH!

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
