Helllo new and need help

A few more thoughts;

Last year while I hunted with Stuart and Rudi of Tally Ho Safaris in Limpopo, South Africa, my wife stayed with her sister in Johannesburg. I had such a great time hunting there and the food was as good or maybe better than any restaurant that I've ever dined.

After Tally Ho, my wife joined me for an elephant hunt in Zimbabwe. There, the accommodations and food were not the luxury I had in South Africa. I was okay with it since I didn't expect, nor was I paying for a 4 star villa and meals. My wife endured it like a trooper but...

This year I am going back to hunt again with Stuart and Rudi and my wife isn't going to miss it for the world!

There are probably many top notch outfitters that advertise on this forum, or our members have hunted with. A few of them chimed into this thread. Do the research of costs, accommodations, hunting areas and terrain, animals you want to hunt an so on. PM members and ask to have a phone conversation. That will provide much info! If the thousands of members on AF haven't hunted with them and have good things to so, then that says a lot.

Welcome aboard and best of luck with you search. You are at the right place to get it done as painlessly as possible.

Hello @Jarrord and welcome to AH. I have taken a good look at Richard Holmes home page and they look pretty good to me. They have obviously invested a lot in their venture and what impressed me is the attention to the aesthetics in their accommodations. The write up on the food is also impressive. The Eastenn Cape is a great area with many endemic species and way back virtually all of the South African game roamed those areas, including buffalo and elephant. I see Richard has re-introduced a lot and I have family and friends who are doing the same in this very area and the game is thriving as if it never left. If the price is good I would say go for it.

Hello Jarrord,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

"I’m 23 and I’m wanting to take my father and I on our first African hunting safari
( also our first hunt out of the country and his first time out of the country)
I found a trip very affordable for my price point.
I’m a bit nervous due to the price point."

Hi Jarrod,

All great advice given so far. For what it's worth, here is advice from a value conscious hunter, i.e. one of limited funds.

Have you set a total cost to budget/plan to?

What country will you hunt?
South Africa is the great entry hunting country due to lower costs and the ranch owner "owns and manages" the animals
PS: Don't worry about a 10000+ acre fenced ranch. You will never see a fence!

Price your travel costs including:
airfare,
travel agent fees, advisable on first trip,
firearms expediter fees, also advisable

Cost per person per day times total days
Does PH charge to transport you and father to and from airport?

Trophy fees
"Trophy" animals will cost more than the average ones
Cull animals will be much more affordable, and as hard, or nearly as hard to hunt! Try stalking up to a heard of female buffalos. There are a lot of eyes to see you!

Taxidermy
If your father dreams of a mounted head and horns in his study, then include this as a cost.
The cost will however be high!
If you don't shoot a true trophy skip the taxidermy and pay for a better hunt.
Rather than taxidermy, hire a videographer to film you and your father.
As for me, I just take photos and short videos...

If I could afford it, I would hunt trophies and have them mounted. If only...
@Mark A Oullettte
If the outfitter charges more for a trophy animal than an average animal that sends up a red flag to me. A trophy to one person may not bet to the hunter.
My PH charge was for the animal regardless if it was 50 inch kudu or 60 inch.
My kudu was 52 inch and was regarded as a good specimen for the Kalahari. Someone else in our group go a 58 inch in another area and that was considered good for the area hunted. Both were the same price.

Jarrord, welcome to the forum! I’d suggest you begin your adventure researching “Safari planning guide” at the top of the page about the center.
It is awesome for a father son to go on such a grand adventure together!
Of course you realize you should write us a report on it! LOL!

Welcome to AH and the posting side!

Welcome to the forum. Here's a hunt report:
A google search pulls up a little more info. Best of luck.

Welcome, I would consider the sponsors on this site
I would decide which animals are your dream hunt and shop the package among outfits. They will likely discount for a big bunch of animals. In other words, don’t just look at price lists.
I would look for properties that are bigger than 15,000 acres with game that is born on the property.
If the kudu is on your list be aware that the subspecies you will be hunting down south will be the smaller horned variety .
Be aware you will to fly again to get to the cape after you have just gotten off a 16 hour flight into Johannesburg.
