Hunted
South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Canada,
My wife and I are heading to Fairbanks September 11 for a couple weeks. I want to hunt. I don't care about fishing but would love to spend a few days on a caribou or brown/grizzly bear hunt. I have not experience with self guided hunts in wilderness areas. I usually go with a guide.

Now to the question- Are there lodges (wife needs some comfort) that I could stay in around Fairbanks and hunt? What are my options for a shorter hunt? Any suggestions?

Guided will likely be fly in and not luxurious. Locals hunt from the road system but are well equipped to do so. AK is not like the lower 48. Hunts are true wilderness and require a lot of prep.

If u don’t mind the drive, consider chartering out of Valdez on a black bear hunt. It is absolutely breathtaking. We ran a boat out of Valdez for years and never got enough of it.

Talk to Craig Hill of Alaska Challenge Guide Service. He lives in Galena but bases all his hunts in that area out of Fairbanks. Feel free to PM me with questions I have hunted with him twice.

You need to spend some time on the Alaska Fish and Wildlife website. Some/most of the areas around Fairbanks are on a lottery drawing for moose and they do that in December.

You could take the haul road up and try to find a road-caribou. But you can't shoot at any that are less than 5 miles from the road (this is to protect the pipeline).

The same road would lead to opportunities for black bears as well.

An unguided non-resident can not hunt grizzly bears on their own.

Just find a current or former Alaskan @WAB has already answered you with advice. We have many members with strong ties to Alaska. @Velo Dog is a good one, out of Anchorage. He is going to hunt Namibia this summer ?, but I don't know the dates. Good Luck.
