Hats on safari

Usually, I wear a baseball cap, but sometimes you need to fashionable, and wear hats that match the animal you are hunting, in order to sneak into the herd, undetected...

@Safari Dave - gotta give you credit…You’ve got a lot of “confidence” to wear that hat while on Safari ——-only a “leopard band” could command more attention.

Then you're eccentric, a safari is the place to "let it shine."

My Mom & Dad bought me that hat after I saw it and thought it was cool when I was about 16 years old at the old Abercrombie & Fitch store in Atlanta at Phipps Plaza. It is a Willis & Geiger.

How could I not take it on my first safari???

(I've toned it down a bit since)

Even though I do spend more time in a baseball cap, a wide brimmed is preferred when the sun is intense.

I've picked up a pith helmet, monocle, and knee high leather boots to stuff pants into for the next one!

@Safari Dave — well Dave that “explains it” and if my Parents bought me something like that then you can bet “I would wear it too” on my Safari….YOU are a GOOD SON !

If it is not a pith helmet, then I favour the Stewart Granger look, with a cream puggaree. Craig Boddington had a nice one.
I have managed to recreate it by fitting a puggaree to my Akubra Angler. I like the angler the best out of their range because of it's modest crown, the others sit too tall.

Oh, I knew I looked the part of a real "dude ", but I didn't care.

I still have the hat, and I might even wear it to Africa again.

(If anyone has a piece of old leopard skin, PM me)

I'd really like to find an old full length leopard skin coat at an estate sale and have a tailor turn it into a motorcycle jacket!

I am convinced while squinting upward at the sun from under the brim of my Rand hat I must look like Stewart Granger

@Safari Dave - Don’t do that Safari Dave - for your own safety do NOT wear a Leopard skin motorcycle jacket….. You’ve likely to pass a Motorcycle Gang and they would just kick-your-ass for the fun of it and then make a jacket out of Your Skin !

You're probably right.

Eccentric, shouldn't get to the point of letting a biker gang make you their "girly-boy"!

(The last time I went to Africa, I saw a man wearing a faux leopard skin fez in the EWR airport. He may have been trolling for that role)

Dang, I wish I could find that picture...

(I don't recommend a fez for a proper safari hat, BTW)

@Safari Dave - I can’t believe you mentioned a “Fez” hat…. My Wife and I went to Casablanca & Morocco for our 20th Wedding Anniversary and mostly because we loved the movie “Casablanca” and the theme song “As time goes By” was our Wedding song. While there we purchased Two “Fez” hats. To think that I made fun of your “Jungle Jim” ZEBRA banded hat and thought it looked ridiculous (like a ‘Pretend’ Safari Hunter’) I Failed to disclose that every time we watch the movie “Casablanca” on TV - we WEAR our Fez Hats and our kids think we look like absolute Douche Bags !! (And we DO).

Just went through this thread. What’s not mentioned guys “the ozone layer over the southern hemisphere is thinner than in the northern hemisphere, which means that UV rays are more likely to reach the ground. This makes it even more important to wear sunscreen when spending time outdoors”.
As well as a good hat that covers the your neck and ears.

@Sideshow great point, first hunting day in NZ left hat at lodge, not a great way to start the trip. Incredible amount of sun, very red face. Didn’t forget my hat again.

Yep that’s got to suck. You know the suns bad when they give you burn time on the weather forecast.

I am an uncompromising snob in very many other respects, but my N. 1 requisite for a safari hat (besides looking good and traditional) is that it has to be crushable. I have to be able to stuff it in my backpack while traveling and wearing my earphones or sleeping in the plane, and it has to pop back to its shape once I take it out and wear it again.

Borsalino is a very well known and respected brand in Italy, quite literally synonymous with "fedora." Don't quote me on it, but it may be the brand that popularized the style on an industrial basis. I wear a Borsalino model "Marco" crushable, unlined travel fedora, taupe color while on safari and other safari-themed events. It's good-looking, traditional, moisture-wicking, and all the other good things I expect a hat to do. Oh, and while looking good, it won't break the bank.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
