Hard Cases for Rifles

Pelican. Hands down. The plane can crash, burn, and sink in the sea. The rifle will not be damaged, even if the little black box is destroyed. I would also recommend mailing some ammo to yourself if you have rifle specific loads...

I used the Browning Brute double rifle case when I went to South Africa this year. I really like that case Double walled, foam lined, 2 lock points, 4 latches, 2 handles 1 for carrying and 1 for pulling on built in rollers and for around $150.00

Pelican 1750. Can fit two scoped rifles in it if you need to. Plus it has wheels. And you can order replacement foam inserts to use with different guns. Absolutely worth the money in my opinion.

I just bought the Pelican 1750 for my first flighted hunt. leaving for SA on July 21.
My figuring is that my 2 scoped rifles and case can't be weighing more than 42 pounds.
Are your rifles just heavier or something?

I have a Pelican and simply love it. It managed to make it from home to Windhoek and back to JFK with no problem. Somehow between JFK and SLC the JetBlue guys managed to break one of the latches off. Pelican promptly send a new one and it was a simple fix. The wheels are nice and it's never been a big issue with the guys at customs.

I have only done the African trip twice. Both times were with my gun and my father's gun in the same case, bolts removed stored right next to the rifles. Each of us packed a 60-round ammo box into a single, locking, rectangular Pelican along with spare clothes, bipods, and other bulky low-value stuff. If anyone freaked out we could have easily transferred the bolts to the ammo container.

+1 for Pelican 1750. Just used it to/from S. Africa with zero issues. Inside I had one scoped rifle and my long-grass shooting sticks (which come apart).

You can order a pack of replacement foam inserts for about $60-$70. The replacement pack comes with three layers of foam. Since you only need to re-cut the middle layer, this basically gives you foam for three additional rifles or combinations. Cutting the foam is super easy with an electric knife.

I also engraved my name, address and phone number on the top of the case using an electric engraver and a stencil. I then filled it in with a white paint crayon. I did this in case the luggage tags got ripped off or damaged.

The OP probably made his decision long ago but wanted to include my experience.

I wrote my name, address with a magic marker at one end. Seems good. unless I move. lol.

It'll help keep an Honest man Honest but Magic Marker can be removed with rubbing alcohol on most Plastic and metal type materials. ;)

I have used the SKB 4 rifle case did well until a trip to Alaska, tied it to a sled, 40 below weather. One barrel ended up through the end and 2 ends crushed. Sent it back to SKB in a week, received a new one with the new TSA locks. They say Unconditionally warranty, and they did. It is over weight with 4 guns, but the rollers are great!

I have been to Africa several times and agree with the gentleman that suggested the Starlight case. Get the double and remove the foam on the bottom. Pack clothing and other items in place of the foam to take advantage of the extra space. Order it with wheels and you will have great gun protection and an easily transported piece of baggage. No signs of damage so far on mine or my hunting buddy that got one on my suggestion.

Pelican 1750 has served me well. I have seen it almost thrown into the oversize baggage area at US, Canadian, and South African airports...with no damage to either rifle...and zero on rifles were not changed when the rifles were subsequently fired at the range. The wheels are really good when you have to travel a ways in an airport, and are rugged enough for parking lots! It is simply one of the most rugged units available, and I heartily recommend it!

morning gents is anyone aware of a bow/rifle case in one ?
it would be way easier if for combo hunters , know id get one
just an idea im toying with
any help appreciated

Another vote for the Pelican 1750, that is what I used in Sept 2012. I cut the foam to fit the 1 rifle I was taking, a spot for the bolt and my bino's. The case took a beating but my rifle and scope were fine. I would not hesitate to use a 1750 case.

Another vote for the Pelican 1750 ive got two of them and they are the best. Used in the Military as well.

Bluey, I know Americase makes a combo. While I cannot speak for this case, I do have three other Americases (One Rifle and Two Shotgun) and have traveled Internationally (Germany to the US) multiple times without any issue.

roger roger thanks grady ill check it out :thumb:

I use SKB and couldn't be happier.
I Just picked up a New Double SKB Case from a company down in Texas,,,they didn,t even ship it in a Box just put the keys inside wrapped a few winds of Duct tape and Turned it over to the UPS Gorillas ,,showed up a week later with a few Shipping Scuffs (who cares) but otherwise 100% condition,,,,I think the 100 flight and the 1500.00 damage Guarantee also they are a little lighter which may save you a couple dollars at the airport JMTC

Now I know I'll buy 2 Pelican 1750! Speaking of expiration dates....... isn't yours coming up soon?

Has anyone tried the Boyt H series hard cases? Looks like a Pelican but much less money. Sold direct or as a Cabelas Armor Extreme.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
