Handgun scopes

Thanks for all the very helpful responses guys!

I use Ultra Dots and Bushnell Elite 2-6X on my .475 L and .500 Smith. Never problems. Also use Ultra Dot and Simmons 2 1/2-&X on my .416 Taylor Encore handgun which makes the .500 look like a pussy cat. No problems. Ultra Dots are great.

Your gun is ported. Looks like you have a SSK T'SOB plus 4 rings. Not a problem. An UltraDot, old Simmons 2 1/2-7X, WEaver 2-8, Leuplod 2-8, Bushnell Elite 2-6 will work fine.

I used to "guide" my relatives around the various deer hunting spots and found it much more convenient to carry a handgun rather than a rifle. I could put the handgun in a bandolier holster and not have to bother with the loading/unloading every time I got in/out of the truck (in Wa St it's legal to have a loaded handgun but not a loaded long gun in a vehicle). We were hunting deer and the max range was about 100 yards, so for me the best choice was a Leupold EER 2x mounted on a S&W Mdl 29. That was about 25 years ago and I see there is a great deal of print about variables up to about 8x. Personally I never saw the need for anything more than 2x and really liked the large field of view.

I have a Burris 2-7 on a Thompson Center Contender in 7-30Waters and very seldom have the power over 5x because as you increase power you loose field of view to where you almost have the pistol closer to your face than you would like.

Now this pistol/scope combination has been working for me for around 25 years on deer size game out to 200 yards

My most common scope used is a Burris 3-12X BPlex on all my single shot handguns since I'm routinely making shots to 500 yds.
My most common revolver scope used is Bushnell 2-6X Elite which has been used to 200 yds. on my FA .454.
If I'm going to be really close to game like the elephant in the photo I use UltraDots. He was taken at 12 yds. on a full blown charge.
I match my scope to the gun used and the expected distance of the shot.

For traditional scopes, I've had great luck with Leupolds. I've found some other brands don't have quite enough eye relief for my long arms. I have a couple Burris AO pistol scopes that are currently on 22's, handguns, but they don't have enough eye relief for me on the higher powers. I prefer a traditional scope for paper punching where I'm after top accuracy, but love the Ultradots for hunting. I have one on a S&W 69 and another on a 686+. They're great for quick shooting.

If your eyes are good, then the red dot will probably suffice. Its what I'd use if I was to go back to hunting with my SBH. Just be sure to get one with a small, very bright dot, one that won't obscure the entire vitals zone at 100 yards. Myself I use Burris scopes almost exclusively on my TC encores and contenders. I have a 2x Leopold on a 44 mag barrel, would not be my first choice, lenses are much smaller than the Burris use, restricting the field of view.

I have gone to Ultra Dot red dot sights on my FA .454 Casull and my Ruger SRH .480 Ruger. These sights are bombproof on high-recoil big bores. I have gone thru many handgun scopes mounted on my .454, but no problems whatsoever with Ultra Dot.

yep, Ultradots works great

My Ultra Dot sights are their newer Gen 2, which I ordered with the 2 MOA dot. They allow for more precise aiming. The dot intensity is adjustable for the existing light conditions. And, if a battery were to fail, the replacement operation takes about 10 seconds. Have never had one fail, so far.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
