Handgun Buffalo

Never would consider a hand gun on buffalo. Not enough power and you put yourself and others at great peril. I have taken 10 buff and other DG, would not consider it as a viable or wise option.
There is a reason that most countries do not allow this.

If you know your gun you will likely be fine. In your situation you will need a perfectly broadside shot and at the distance you are comfortable with. I would only add to be ready to follow up. The sarcasm comes from the fact that more hunters/PH's are killed or wounded by buffalo than anything else. It is inevitable that you will get such comments. I wish you the best of luck.
Please post a hunt report.

Good day sir, ive hunted Buffalo bull and cow with a hunter 2 years ago and he also used a 500 S&W hand gun, and it it performed great the main focus should be is that you are comfortable and your shot placement, in my opinion shot placement and penetration is key. At 50 yards you will smoke him and it always help if you could get a good follow up shot.
Good luck, enjoy the experience and be safe.
Regards
Derian
Thank you for sharing your experiences. Guessing that's what it's a 10 day hunt

Not sure why everyone seems to get their knickers in a twist when someone mentions handgun hunting. I have never heard this much bitching about someone with a bow and arrow. The proper handgun is much more superior.

I have killed many 1,500 - 2,500 LB cattle, both bulls and cows with either a 357 magnum or 44 magnum handgun. Head shots in the ear drop them dead. Body shots I would follow up with additional shots.

Stay close, use the proper bullet and follow up with additional shots and you should be fine. Sounds like you are experienced and have talked this through with your PH. Good luck and report back after the hunt.

Yes, please post a picture of your handgun and the ammo.

For all you doubters and the negative comments. My say is, follow your dreams regardless of the jealous groups and uninformed public. My 500 Smith performed well, just as I suspected Using Buffalo bore XPB 375 gr and a couple of 400 gr solids. It did take a pounding, But Thanks to a great PH and Numzaan Safaris I ended up with a SCI Gold Medal ranking trophy, scoring 1174/8. As near as I can tell, It will score in the top 25 taken with a handgun.

What did you mean by "it did take a pounding"?

Are you going to write a hunt report?

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...
Behind the scenes of taking that perfect picture.....

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris
