Thank you so much , Skinnersblade. I actually wrote this article , because you told me that you would enjoy it. Foreign Hunters can obviously hunt in Bangladesh. However , it is not commercialized. You have to personally know a local Bangladeshi hunter who is a member of Bangladesh Shooting Federation ( BSF ) . If you ever plan to come deer hunting , boar hunting , water fowl hunting or jungle fowl hunting in Bangladesh , it will be my pleasure to guide you free of charge . Kawshik would be more than happy to do so as well.
His niece's in-laws are American and he takes them out for cheetal deer shikar once a year when they visit Bangladesh.
I often accompany them as well , like l did last year .
Captain Newaz has a slightly busier schedule , as he is a married man and a grandfather . However , even he would be more than happy to clear some time on his schedule to guide any of you fine gentlemen .

In the US and Europe, dogs are used to retrieve shot birds from both land and water. They are also used, where legal, to track and run down raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, deer and wild boar.

All this has raised some questions in my mind. I can’t remember ever asking him about or even discussing his fondness for the smaller calibers. If I did I have forgotten or if I didn’t then certainly an opportunity missed on my part. I do remember his natural ability with both rifle and shotgun. But not the specifics of caliber/gauge choice. Do you recall if he talked about or referenced either O’Connor or WDM Bell? Seems logical to wonder about...

I do recall having an extremely lengthy conversation with him about rifles and calibres , Four Five Eight ( 1 of my fa . For a fact l can tell you that he owned 6 rifles , 4 shot guns , 1 combined -rifle-and-shot gun , 2 semi automatic pistols and 3 revolvers ( as of 1964 . I do not know if he purchased any other armaments after 1964 ). We spoke about fire arms for an entire hour once , while sitting in the shikar camp during the evening .
He told me that he owned :
1) Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 chambered in .270 Winchester calibre
2) Mauser Oberndorf originally chambered in 8 × 60 mm , which he had re barreled to .30-06 Springfield calibre
3) Winchester Model 1894 lever rifle , chambered in .30-30 Winchester.
4) A custom built rifle made by Griffin & Howe chambered in .450 Watts , built on a salvaged pre World War II magnum Mauser action
5) A Mannlicher Model 1903 bolt rifle , chambered in .423 Mauser ( the same calibre as Tobin's FN Mauser bolt rifle )
6) A .22 Long Rifle calibre single shot rifle made by J Stevens .
7) A 12 Bore Winchester Model 1912 pump shot gun ( l never asked him what choke the gun had , or if the gun had a 2.75 inch chamber or a 3 inch chamber )

He had some very outspoken views about fire arms choices. He preferred side by side shot guns to over under shot guns , because he claimed that , " If God intended men to shoot vertically stacked barrels , then he would have made our eyes vertically stacked as well. "
Despite this , he owned the over under format combined-rifle-and-shot gun.
He hated double trigger shot guns . He preferred a single trigger in both his side by side shot guns. He was very angry that the American Army had replaced the .30-06 Springfield service cartridge with the 7.62 NATO service cartridge. He loved the .45 Automatic Colt Pistol calibre and believed that the 9 mm Parabellum calibre was a " lady's calibre " . He hated English guns ( despite owning a 28 Bore Westley Richards ) , calling them " over priced fancy rip offs . " His favorite rifle of all time was his rebarrelled Mauser Oberndorf chambered in .30-06 Springfield . He did not like American side by side shot guns , claiming that the stocks were not shaped properly to mitigate recoil .
He bore no ill will against Germans . However , he despised Japanese people , due to the tragedy at Pearl Harbor.
If he were alive today and found out that the American Army replaced the .45 Automatic Colt Pistol calibre side arms with 9 mm Parabellum calibre side arms , then he would have lost his mind !
When you called him " eccentric " , you were not joking ! He certainly had some unusual choices in fire arms , although he certainly knew what he liked .
I never asked him about his favorite fire arms writers though. What l will never understand is why he would own a .450 Watts calibre bolt rifle , yet bring a .30-06 Springfield calibre bolt rifle to shoot an Asian Sloth Bear and a gaur in 1964 , as part of his " Trophy Room Special " package deal . What is scarier , is that he actually succeeded flawlessly in taking down both those brutes and every other trophy listed in Allwyn Cooper Limited's " Trophy Room Special " package deal.

Thank you so much for your appreciation , Ryan . I have used dogs in the past and l use dogs even now for hunting Muntjac deer , and quails . I used to use dogs to help me in hunting down wounded panthers. However , after 2 of my loyal dogs got killed during a very hair raising encounter with a wounded 200 pound forest panther , l decided that l would risk my dog's lives no more.

That is a very good habit . Writing something down allows me to always remember it. When l was a literature student , l had to memorize entire poems . I used to do so by writing the poems down. Once : open book and once : unseen . It is a really good form of psychological exercise and memory retention . I also find that it is exceptionally easy to remember a certain memory , if you can tie it to a significantly important date in your life .
For example , the 1st time l ever guided Mr. Bolack was the 2nd time in my life that l partnered up with Kawshik to guide a shikar.

2 days later , we were all in Darjeeling . Mr. Bolack was to stay in Darjeeling Circuit House . I was assigned to partner up with my good friend , fellow professional shikaree and fellow forum member , @Kawshik Rahman to guide Mr. Bolack . Kawshik and l had guided a client together for a royal Bengal tiger shikar , just a few months back . And we had become very fast friends . Our views were very similar and we always made it a point to visit each other at least twice a month . Once a month l would visit Kawshik , his parents and his girl friend , Antora in Darjeeling . Once a month , Kawshik and his girl friend would come to Nagpur to visit me , Tobin and my grand father .
2 days after our arrival , we all set out to a very large steam connected to the Buri Ganga river . Mr. Bolack had chosen to shoot Indian cranes , as his selected water fowl . Along with us , was a German lady who was Kawshik's client . She wanted to shoot cranes as well ( and a crocodile , but that story is for Kawshik to tell ) . The German lady had a really beautiful combined -rifle - and -shot gun in an over under format . The rifle barrel was chambered in 9.3 × 74 Rimmed calibre . The shot gun barrel was of 12 bore , with a 2.75 inch chamber and a modified choke barrel . We also had Kawshik's Nepalese gun bearer , Rishi Chokroborti and 4 coolies with us. Kawshik carried his IOF 12 Bore DBBL shot gun , loaded with 2.75 inch SG cartridges ( which held 12 copper plated pellets in each cartridge . )
I carried my old Belgian 12 Bore double barreled side by side shot gun , loaded with Eley Grand Prix 2.5 inch spherical ball cartridges . Here is a photograph taken from the internet of an Eley Grand Prix spherical ball cartridge .

When we arrived at the stream , we saw many cranes on the water and some flying . There must have been hundreds of cranes in that stream . We decided that we were going to use a dinghy boat to get right into the middle of the stream , so that Mr. Bolack and the German lady could open fire on the cranes .
Fortunately , Kawshik ( having an immense level of fore sight ) had already rented a boat man and a dinghy boat in advance , to provide us with service .

Thus , Kawshik , Mr. Bolack , the German lady , Rishi and l all got on to the dinghy boat and the boat man rowed the boat across the stream . Mr. Bolack readied his Westley Richards 28 bore . The German lady readied her combined -rifle-and-shot gun , having loaded the shot gun barrel with a no. 2 shot cartridge produced by a German firm ( l believe it was Rottweil , if my memory serves me correctly . ) . Kawshik was to keep handing the German lady fresh cartridges from a leather satchel , which held the lady's spare cartridges . Rishi was to keep supplying Mr. Bolack with fresh no.5 cartridges for his 28 bore , from a canvas bag which held Mr . Bolack's spare cartridges . In around 5 minutes , the shooting had commenced .

Now , l cannot tell a lie to all of you , gentlemen . I was 100 % confident that Mr. Bolack could not successfully bag even a single crane with such a " little toy " as the 28 bore. However , l was to be proven wrong in the most pleasantly surprising manner . To say that Mr. Tom Bolack was an extremely talented wing shooter would be a VERY BIG under statement . He used that 28 bore with such proficiency that it could put the users of 12 bore shot guns to shame .
He was everything a shooter should aspire to be , and much , much more . Using that 28 bore side by side shot gun and no. 5 Eley cartridges , Mr. Bolack took an exact 2 dozen cranes in under 9 minutes . To be fair , most of the cranes which he shot were on the water . However , this makes his feat no less remarkable . He did not miss even 1 shot . I counted his expended cartridges myself when the shooting had ceased . He had expended 24 cartridges and he had taken down an exact number of 24 cranes .

The German lady did not fare too badly either . With 15 cartridges , she took down 10 cranes .
When the shooting was over , we took the boat back onto land , while the coolies waded into the stream to recover the dead cranes . Below , l have provided a photograph taken myself of Mr. Bolack and the German lady , while they were getting down from the boat . Mr. Bolack , ever the courteous gentleman , helped the German lady climb down from the boat . And the German lady , ever so receptive to courtesy , gladly took his hand . These were the days before , so-called " Feminism " had come to plague the world . These were the days when a gentleman could hold a door open for a lady or offer her his hand to help her climb down from a boat , without being called a " chauvinistic sexist " .

Kawshik had Rishi and the coolies set up a nice brace of tents for Mr. Bolack and the German lady to take rest in , for an hour or two . In the mean time , Kawshik served them coffee and refreshments . Mr. Bolack preferred American coffee to all others , with cream and extra sugar. The German lady preferred a French coffee brand with condensed milk , but no sugar. Kawshik also served them strawberry jam biscuits ( fresh from Glenary Bakery , which used to be the best bakery in Darjeeling . ) and roasted beef sandwiches with Coleman's mustard .
Here is a photograph taken by myself of a typical tent arrangement which we would set up for clients to rest , back in those days .

While , Mr. Bolack and the German lady were getting their rest , l noticed several fat , delicious looking wild ducks flying above the stream and some even swimming in the water . I asked Mr. Bolack for permission to shoot a few for my and Kawshik's personal larder . Mr. Bolack immediately agreed and told me to " Have fun and knock yourself out . "

I opened the breech of my old Belgian shot gun and removed the Eley Grand Prix spherical ball cartridges . Then , l put in a brace of Eley 3 inch Alphamax no. 6 cartridges into the breech of my shot gun. I let fly at the ducks from the bank of the stream and with 10 cartridges , l successfully took 8 ducks in the next 15 minutes . The coolies collected the dead ducks and brought them to me .
Below , l have provided a photograph taken by Kawshik of me with my old Belgian shot gun and the ducks which l had bagged that day . As you all can see , l was extremely happy , knowing that l had bagged so many delicious ducks for supper .

We let Rishi have 2 of the ducks and the rest ; Kawshik and l kept for ourselves . As an unexpected bonus , Mr. Bolack was exceptionally kind to us and had let us have 4 of the cranes which he had shot . That night , while Mr. Bolack and the German lady took rest in Darjeeling Circuit House , a feast took place in Kawshik's house . Kawshik , Antora , Kawshik's parents and l , had a lovely dinner of wild duck and crane. I consider wood fire roasted wild duck , glazed in honey to be 1 of the finest delicacies of all time , especially when the skin gets extra crispy . Kawshik's mother and Antora really knew how to cook very well .

Tomorrow , l will write about the events which transpired during Mr. Bolack's royal Bengal tiger shikar , and l will provide a conclusion for this article. But until then , dear readers ... Good Night .

I had a young lady refuse to go out with me for the sole reason that I had asked her fathers permission. It seems the world is changing around us and someone forgot to inlighten us on the new rules.
A simple act such as walking a lady to her door at the end of the night now could be considered a sign of disrespect to the wrong lady.

Why thank you , Bob. Times have sadly changed . Women in our time were very easy to please . Kawshik and my girl friends were very easy going girls , as were most girls of our time. If you took them out for coffee & sandwiches once or twice a week and took them to the carnival and bought them some ice cream or cotton candy , they would be very happy. Maybe once a month , take them to a concert or the cinema and treat them a steak . Both our girl friends were extremely supportive of hunting , and in the case of Kawshik's girl friend ( Antora ) she even used to go hunting with him some times. She killed a panther herself once , by using a shot gun . Back in those days , if you gave a girl a bouquet of flowers or some pastries from Glenary Bakery ( India's oldest bakery in Darjeeling ) , you could make her smile ( obviously we bought them more expensive gifts as well , but they never asked for any of it . )
We would always ask our girl friends' parents for their permission before going out with their daughters and we would always have them back home by 10 PM .
If you wanted to write to your girl friend , you wrote her a letter and then sprayed cologne on it . If you wanted to use the telephone to talk to your girl friend , you waited for your parents to leave the house and then you called her on the land line . Telephones back then used to have those large rotary dials.
Some times , we were out of the town for an entire week guiding clients for shikar . However , our girl friends always understood and were always supportive of us , rather than angry .
Today , the world is a shell of what it once was. I see that many of our younger generation nowadays has many problems . Boy friends and girl friends now use social media such as face books and they often demand each other's face book passwords , because they trust each other so little . Girls force their boy friends to become vegan ( or vice versa ) . A few days ago , 1 of my young restaurant employees was lamenting to me that his girl friend left him because he could not gift her an I Phone ! And these days , in a sexual harassment case , if a girl so much as opens her mouth and blames a man without any evidence , then everyone gets ready to lynch the man , without wondering if he might possibly be innocent. That is what the world has come to .
However , men like you who are genuine gentlemen , will always conduct themselves like gentlemen in the presence of ladies ... regardless of what this world has come to.

The world has certainly changed and not for the better. There seems to be some much disrespect for others as well. I am fortunate to have a son that enjoys shooting. I am taking him trap shooting on Wednesday. My beautiful wife is a non shooter but enjoys the bush and travel to other areas and countries. Until I met her she had only had store bought meat but now enjoys the fruits of hunting and new foods.
I am very blessed to have such a family. We were invited to a new neighbors place for lunch today. It was the first time we had had Nepalese food, a true delight to the senses and palate.

I never asked him about his favorite fire arms writers though. What l will never understand is why he would own a .450 Watts calibre bolt rifle , yet bring a .30-06 Springfield calibre bolt rifle to shoot an Asian Sloth Bear and a gaur in 1964 , as part of his " Trophy Room Special " package deal . What is scarier , is that he actually succeeded flawlessly in taking down both those brutes and every other trophy listed in Allwyn Cooper Limited's " Trophy Room Special " package deal.

This is nothing , Spike T. I had a client who was an extremely wealthy cattle ranch owner . He owned 5 Cadillac cars .
However , he was so parsimonious about his fire arms and ammunition ! He used to bring a Springfield Model 1903 military surplus rifle , chambered in .30-06 Springfield and military surplus 168 grain pointed tip ( spitzer ammunition ) for shikar . For the life of me , l could NEVER figure out why a billionaire client would come to a $10,000 ( American Dollars ) shikar with military surplus ammunition , instead of proper sporting ammunition .
He was a true gentleman in every definition of the word. However , following up wounded dangerous game which he had taken shots at , was a living HELL for us professional shikarees.

By the way , l will start writing my new article about royal Bengal tigers from today , as my fishing trip ended prematurely ( but highly successfully ) .

I also caught some tilapia . I had no idea that you gentlemen enjoyed fishing too .
