Guide Gun at the range

Are torque values published for the various action screws? Just curious. Thank you.

This seems to be one of the hardest things in the world to get!!!!

Varies by rifle and screw blah blah blah..... Here is what I do, but I'm no expert... First, I will do a search and see if I can find anything specific for the rifle on the internet. Assuming I can't I use the following:
  • Action screws - 45 lb
  • Base screws - 30 lb
  • Ring screw - 20 lb
As an examply, I have found some information where Leopold recommends 17 lb, so I figure 20 is pretty close and keeps it simple....

Thank you!

Gladly!

It has been a while, but I have also found some interesting articles about gun harmonics and rifles shooting more accurately with different action torque, kind of like handloading with different powder/velocity.

I've never taken the FAT Wrench to the range to try three shot groups with different torque settings, but the theory seems to make sense.

Custom sorry but I just saw your question! I stayed at the Lodge on the Elands river near Rust de Winter Dam. It's run by a man named Nico Erasmus. I've stayed there on two safaris and would not hesitate to go back!

Looks like a great place, Charlie. I have not stayed at that one.

Picked up the Guide Gun today. I must say, I am impressed. It's one hell of a rifle for $950.00 (amazing what the factories can turn out these days, given the cost).

The person I go to for FFL transfers is a gunsmith. I asked about torque on the action screws (stock bedding screws). He said to stay in the 20-30 in-lbs range. It seems a bit light for the angled screw up front, but what do I know? My expertise is all in old English guns, which are about as far removed as the Guide Gun as one can get.

Looking forward to some range time this weekend. Fingers crossed nothing gets in the way of the opportunity.

CT are you taking your Guide Gun back to the range this weekend?

My life-long dream is a fly-in hunt in Alaska, and while I realize that in the Guide Gun platform a 375 would have been the more logical choice, I've always wanted a 416. I figure that for lesser game the 350 grain Swift A-frame would be an excellent option.

I have loaded some 350g Swift A frame for my Ruger 416 Alaskan , the load shoots well and is manageable.

I mainly use my Alaskan as a back up rifle when accompanying DG hunts with open sights and a 400g solid .

however when I fit the QD Leupold scope , I use a 350g A frame.

Link to Ruger Guide Gun Instruction Manual:

Interesting and somewhat frustrating that Ruger can be specific with the torque on one screw (95 in-lbs) and then vague on the others ("snugly")

Pete 375 or better is normally required on dangerous game. But the 300 win mag will be with me if the PH decides it more appropriate.

for info ,in zambia the minimum for lion and leopard is 300 cal, and i do like the look of those guide guns.

@spike.t , I never thought I would hear you say that you like the Ruger guide gun , take a look at the previous model called the Alaskan , they are great .

Larry in its own way the Guide Gun is a beautiful rifle. Yes the Alaskan was a well made classic rifle but for the American market it was too beautiful and thus production costs were not supported by what the market could bear with respect to price. Now if it isn't black and has a plastic stock a rifle will not sell well in the US.

yeah its the short barrels and compact look of both. @CAustin i thought the alaskan had a black synthetic stock?

Charlie , I've never seen the black on black like that .... nice
Spike , I agree with you on the short compact barrel , it's a pleasure to carry !

The black on black is the blued steel version. Some guys did coat their stainless Alaskans for the same look, though.

I haven't made it to the range, yet. Last weekend it rained (not that the Guide Gun would've been bothered by a little water), and this weekend I'm too stacked with projects. What is it they say...something about the anticipation being a major portion of the joy???

Well, anyway, I've shouldered the rifle about 95 times. It lines up well and I'm feeling the itch, big time.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
