Well...not sure how deep the hooks are in however, no, I do not want to scare him off.
We were looking around the other day and are still shopping around but, do you know anything about the Weatherby Vanguard Camilla? Of all we have looked at so far, they are just too big (or really heavy). I need something smaller. I shoot his .308 all the time but the difference is, he is like 7 foot tall and I am 5'5" and I weigh 100 pounds less than him so, he has no issue with guns fitting him. We looked at a few Savage rifles but they did not have any of the Lady Hunter rifles for me to look at.
Still having fun shopping around of course, but recommendations are always welcomed and appreciated!

I'll second the recommendation on the Lady Hunter - I bought one for my wife in .270 and it is much easier for her as far as weight and length of pull. Her only problem is she is left eye dominant and prefers to shoot lefty even though she is right handed - which puts the raised comb on the wrong side of the stock.

My wife is about your size and she is quite fond of her 270. I think you have the right idea of stay away of some of the niche calibers when first starting out.

The Weatherby Vanguard Camilla will also fit you better than a "man's" rifle. If you can, try both of them to see how they feel. Women's rifles have a longer drop at the "comb" which allows you to see the sights more clearly when you mount the rifle to your shoulder "naturally." The reason women need this is that their necks are longer then men's. Good luck!!

Gina Ruger makes the M77 in a compact version with a 16” barrel. This one is 308 but you can also get it in a 7mm08. I bought this when my son was 14 for him to use!

Thank you for posting this picture! We looked at an entry level Ruger .308 but I did not like the feel of it. I have been told the M77 is a higher quality, and a good rifle, I did not know they made it in a compact. Could you tell me roughly, how tall your son was when you got this for him and roughly how much he weighed? I am interested in checking this out.

Sure! He was about five foot four and 100 pounds sopping wet! If your worried about recoil Google felt recoil chart and you can get an idea of what the push will be from a particular caliber.

Check out the Ruger M77 FTW if youre a fan of the M77. They make one in .308.. The main benefit I see in this variant is that it comes with 3x 1/2" spacers built into the butt of the stock.. so that you can easily adjust the length of pull..

My wife is 5'3".. we removed all the spacers from her FTW, and it fits her very well now..

The FTW also has several other nice frills about it.. it was designed by the instructor cadre at the SAAM School at the FTW Ranch (well known and highly regarded training location for people that are interested in hunting dangerous game and for people interested in long range precision shooting).. As such, it is highly accurate right out of the box.. It also comes with a muzzle brake (not that one is needed with a .308), and a muzzle weight that can be used in lieu of the brake that doesnt shift the point of impact of the round when you switch between the weight and the brake (we just leave the weight on my wifes rifle.. she has never used the brake)..

Its got an all weather finish on it.. a long enough barrel to suck everything out of the .308 that can be had, etc..etc..

My wife has taken elk, aoudad, hogs, and deer with hers so far.. and will be taking it to Africa tomorrow to hunt sable and other plains game.. With her other .308 she has taken kudu, gemsbok, wildebeest, zebra, and blesbok (.308 is more than capable enough for African PG outside of eland IMO)..
