Long time lurker, decided to register as I’m heading to Namibia for a PG safari next week.

I stalk deer in Ireland a couple of times a week in season, shoot vermin and do a bit of walked up woodcock, snipe and pheasant shooting over my red setter. I also fish whenever I can.

I use a .Howa 243 for fallow deer in Ireland and for roe in Scotland. I also own a TT Proctor Mauser in 7x57 which is for red deer and I have been contemplating taking to Africa.
I’ve decided to use the PH rifle for this trip, to make travel a bit simpler and also as the PH have some slightly beefier calibres.

I’ve been to Southern Africa before but not on Safari. Currently sat on a train to Dublin watching the rain turn every green field into a swamp, the draw of dry warm weather is almost as strong as the hunting.

Looking forward to learning from the experience of others on the forum.

Good day! Welcome to AH! Enjoy your upcoming safari!
Best regards
Johan

Welcome on board. Good to hear of another TT Proctor rifle owner. His work was excellent and there are a lot of rifles of his are still out there doing the job. There may be a 9.3x62 coming up soon. I have a couple of his Safari rifles in .375 H&H and .458 Lott and a friend has just bought a 375 that he made. Great rifles, how long have you owned yours?

I’ve had it a year. bought secondhand, only 400 rounds through it! I grew up near Wilmslow so I just had to buy it, a beautiful rifle-a product of different times. There is actually another member on here from Ireland with a Proctor who’s going on the Safari.

Like you say they are from a bygone era but they are great rifles in the classic Rigby style that remain practical and ready for work today. The 7x57 you own would be perfect for PG in Africa at close ish ranges. I am sure you will have a great time on your imminent trip! Let us know how you get on…

Dryan,

Ireland is one of my favorite places in the world. My wife and I just spent a couple of weeks there last fall. Flew into Dublin, drove fast to get west and then wandered down the Wild Atlantic Way. Welcome to the forum. A great trove of information here as you are planning the trip.

It surely is my favourite place in the world. It could do with a roof though!

I live just on the Wild Atlantic Way and work in Dublin, the best of both worlds!

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...
Behind the scenes of taking that perfect picture.....

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris
