I’ve been to parts of Africa when I was in the military, but that was decades ago mi doubt that I’ll ever get to hunt there, but I love reading about it and I have a love for Ruger No.1s, hence the screen name, and Mauser actions on sporting arms, so when I was searching for some information on a No.1 I came across this forum and it looked interesting so I thought that I’d join. I doubt that I’ll have much in the way of information to pass on, though I do have a degree in gunsmithing from an actual college, so maybe I can answer someone‘s question at some point. Mostly I joined just to read the stories and occasionally ask questions about something related to Africa as a whole and the guns used to hunt there.

Sounds like I’m in good company here. I’m in Murfreesboro right now and have been for years, but I’m in the process of building on some land. I keep saying that this is weird but as soon as I do someone says that they’ve done that or know someone that has, but I need a shop because I have some machine tools, not all that I want but they don’t work in a living room, so I’m building the shop first, moving into it, selling my current house and then building a house on the land. The shop comes out to 1440 square feet and the house will be somewhere around 1600 or so, but the best part is that I have almost 48 acres and my own private shooting range a few hundred yards from the house.

As it stands right now I have 5 Ruger No.1s, all stock, but one is by Lipsey’s so it has a color case hardened receiver. That one is the No.1-RSI in .257 Roberts. The others are a No.1-A in .22 Hornet, a No.1-A in .275 Rigby (it’s marked that way which I thought was kind of cool), a No.1-A in .303 British (I had to buy that one, I came across it and I had some ammo for it at home and no gun for it ) and finally one that I just picked up this week, a No.1-H in .375 H&H Magnum. I’m not sure what I’ll hunt with that one, but I’ll have to find something.

BTW, Jimmy Jack, I’ve been dreaming about getting the others color case hardened, maybe by Turnbull. I’ve seen some of his stuff and it’s absolutely gorgeous! So you’ve managed to make jealous right off the bat.

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Yours truly adores the Ruger No1 rifle and of course the Farguharson (among a select very few others).
The very first ***caribou I shot was with a Ruger #1, in .375 H&H and the good old Winchester “Power Point” bullet of 270 grains.
I am advertising and booking for Khomas Safaris, a Namibian company, but ***I have lived in Alaska 41 years.

Anyway, you mentioned figuring on using your No1 in .375 caliber on some future critter there.
I have hunted several caribou and black tail deer with this caliber, using various bullets.
All resulted in perfect success.

If your hunting area for local deer (and groundhogs) is open pastures and longer shots, try the Speer brand 235 grain semi-spitzer, at whatever velocity you get your best accuracy with.
If there is a mixture of conditions where there may be short to long shots common, try any of the 270 grain softs.
For strictly closer range conditions (under about 300 paces), I have enjoyed excellent success (less ~ a lot less bloodshot meat) with 300 gr Hornady round nose soft points, loaded down to 2400 fps.
I’ve used this last load in Africa also with perfect success.

Welcome to AH. Honestly, I know very little about guns or rifles (I'm a non-hunter who joins my husband) but I know many people here will enjoy your expertise. As far as hunting in Africa goes. I wouldn't ever rule it out. Many people have misconceptions about how expensive it is. Certain countries, certain species, and certain outfitters are more expensive....because it does cost more to operate in those country ....or for those animals. BUT, there are some very reasonable plains game hunts that will give you an amazing experience without costing you an arm and a leg. In fact you can do some of those cheaper than doing a guided mule deer or elk hunt. Plus look at auctions at banquets etc. Just do your homework first.

Also, thank you for your service. Freedom is NOT free. My Dad, four brothers, brother-in-law, and husband also served as well. My husband also spent time in Africa in Somalia during Blackhawk down.
