LT Backstrap, welcome to the AH forum and thank you for your service!

welcome to AH @LT Backstrap ! I'm sure you'll fit right in!

What have your experiments on those hogs told you so far on your reloads? Anything you have discovered?

Cheers!

I really like how the medium velocity heavy 7mm and 6.5mm bullets work on them. Taken quite a few with the lever action big bores in .444 and 45/70, they get the job done. One of my favorites is a lever action Marlin .41 Magnum shooting a hard cast 265 grain WLNGC. Lever actions are great when you stumble into a mess of them.

Welcome aboard LT Backstrap. I enjoyed your introduction. The 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser has been my go-to rifle for over 20 years. I've been using 140 Gr. Partitions on Hogs, but lately I've been using some 156 Gr. Norma on Whitetails. I bet they'll be fine for hogs as well. BTW thanks for your service. There are a lot of Ex-GIs on AH. Feel free to post some photos and stories of your previous hunts.
Many thanks. The 6.5x55 is a great round. I have taken many hogs and deer with the Nosler 140 Gr. Partitions and AccuBonds. Found a box of 6.5mm 125 Gr. Partitions in my stash over the weekend, they were stacked up with the 7mm bullets. Loaded up some with Ramshot Hunter powder. Excited to test them at the range and try something new in the field. Also loaded up some of the round nose Hornady 160s to try out.

@LT Backstrap
Those levers are good when you stumble into a mess of hogs, but If'n y'all want a real hoot try a sporterised 303 SMLE with a 10 shot mag and 10 150gn cartridges.
That's a real hoot and when you run out of ammo drop the mag, slap another one in and keep shooting.

Hello LT Backstrap,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I predict that you will enjoy perfect success on critters when using those 160 grain Hornady RNSP in your 6.5x55.

Long / heavy for caliber Hornady round nosed bullets in various cartridges are sadly, with today’s excessive velocity culture, misunderstood, overlooked, ignored and shrugged off by most hunters.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Many thanks Velo Dog. I concur, the older, slower, and heavy bullets still work. Those that hunted before us had it all figured out.

Long time lurker here. Avid rifle nut and reloader. Love the history and older calibers such as 6.5 x 55, 7x57 &. .375 H&H. Enjoy the big bore Marlin levers as well in .444 Marlin and 45/70 Gov. Have hunted primarily in North America, with some great Alaska hunts. Now retired career military and just retired after 10 years in the civilian sector. Hunt mostly whitetails and hogs in AL on private land. I like to use the use hogs as ballistic gelatin for my reloads. We have a severe hog problem in AL, so there are plenty of year-round opportunities for hunting them. I’ve been on a 7mm kick lately reloading the 7x57, 7mm 08, and the .280 Remington. Fortunately, I have horded reloading components for years, so I have a tidy stockpile. I did have some trouble finding heavy 7mm bullets but managed to find some 175 grain Woodleigh Weldcores which I loaded for the 7x57. They have been lethal on hogs so far, looking forward to using them for whitetail. Great to be here and enjoy the topics.
Welcome to the posting side sir.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
