Greetings/First time Cape buffalo hunt

While I have hunted buffalo many times, if I were looking at hunting in South Africa, I would seriously consider @TSALA HUNTING SAFARIS and @GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS. These 2 outfits are first class. Tsala is a short 2 hour drive from the airport in JNB, Game 4 Africa is an additional flight from JNB over to Port Elizabeth.

If I were hunting in Zimbabwe I would consider @TSALA HUNTING SAFARIS or Dalton and York.

For both Tsala and Game 4 Africa, they both have self-sustaining herds, Tsala has some truly huge buffalo. They are close to Bela Bela so the wife and kids could do into town for shopping/spa, day trips, etc.

Having said all of this, there are many other truly find outfitters that others here have hunted with. Sorting out who to hunt with is half the fun of taking a trip!!

My favorite time to hunt Africa is July early August given that is the heart of their winter. Yes Delta flies direct with Main cabin round trip ranging from $1500-$1800 per person. I have used Qatar which is a great airline by Delta direct 14.5 hours, Qatar 33.5 hours with one stop…no thanks given I am losing hunting time with Qatar for roughly similar cost to Delta direct

I'll cast another vote for @GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS, having hunted buffalo there twice.

My first was late May and my second was mid-June. Frankly, as a long time resident of Alaska, I don't think anyone over there has a firm grasp of the words "cold" or "winter"...

Another thing for RSA it's not how many total acres, but how many continuous acres.

For what you are looking for, I would recommend the Greater Victoria Falls Area for a hunt. Your family can stay in VF, it's very safe and you would not be very far away if there is a problem.

As for the Delta Flight, it arrives late afternoon requiring and overnight at JNB. The European and Gulf States flight arrive in the morning allowing to to get your Airlink flight the day of arrival, unless its Kasane, Botswana. Then you need a very early arrival (Qatar).

Hello there!

I am a new member on the forum. I should have joined years ago but better late than never.

I live in Georgia and after many years of deer/elk etc North America hunting, have finally decided to do an Africa trip for Cape buffalo.

I know absolutely nothing about this so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am attending the Dallas Safari Club convention this weekend in Atlanta. There are going to be dozens of different outfitters as many of you all already know, and I would like some advice on how to pick the right outfitter before writing a check.

Some basic info that might be helpful in your recommendations are:

I can do the trip alone or with family. I am guessing if I take the wife, I would be limited to South Africa and I'm guessing she and the kids would be hanging in the main city while I do the hunt for a few days.

I would like to experience the real deal but am I correct in saying that that would require me to go outside of SA which would probably be a solo trip?

Are the buffalo hunts in SA all fenced in? I know that the properties could thousands of acres so does that really make it significantly different experience than a buffalo hunt in another open range area?

Hello and welcome. Planning the trip is almost as fun as going!
So I have taken my wife and kids with me on a buffalo hunt several years ago. They had a great time. I have hunted South Africa and Namibia and I wouldn’t have a problem taking my family to either. As far as the other countries I cannot speak to that with any helpful advice. I would think that Zambia, Botswana, and Tanzania would be family friendly but have no first hand knowledge so best to ask those that do.
As been stated RSA buffalo can be quite controversial. It really boils down to what you are expecting and comfortable with. Personally a property of 10,000 acres (approximately 15.5 square miles) or larger I am certainly comfortable with. Smaller properties with very dense cover I personally would be comfortable with to an extent but that would greatly depend on some specific circumstances and I would highly recommend due diligence to make sure it is a hunt you would be comfortable with.
I have hunted both completely free range areas and high fenced farms in RSA and never felt like the fence was an issue nor ever saw it on the properties I was on once inside. It is certainly a personal choice.
RSA will be your most economical choice and wonderful hunts can be had. There are high fenced operations in Namibia and Zambia as well as (I believe) Botswana and a few in Zim from what I’ve been told but I can’t speak to that first hand. Point being though no matter where you hunt make sure to be very clear and upfront about what your expectations are and ask lots of questions.
Once you narrow it down I’d ask the folks here on AH if anyone has ever hunted with them and I would almost bet at least someone has and can give you their experiences.
