Like a lot of folks here I’m not slow to criticize our bureaucrats for making things harder than they need to be. So to be fair I think it’s important to share when I have a good experience.

I needed a couple of 4457 forms completed for some upcoming trips. I called the CBP office at Dulles and they told me their hours and said come out any time. Being a pessimist I planned on spending a long time waiting and having some confusion.

So I showed up at Dulles yesterday afternoon, upon arrival I saw there was a line of people wait g for Global Entry interviews. A uniformed officer saw my gun case and “you’re not here for Global Entry are you” after I shook my head h directed me to a phone and told me to pick it up and wait for an answer. I told the lady what I needed and she said have a seat.

Not 2 minutes late a guy came out and asked if I was there for the firearms. Then asked if I was flying out today. He took me back to the room looked at my forms looked at the serial numbers and said go back out and have a seat. Less than 5 minutes later he came out with the stamped forms and said “enjoy your trip”.

Total time in prom parking to leaving the airport less than 30 minutes. I paid the minimum fee on leaving the parking lot.

Not that anybody needs to care about my experience and no bet some of you are saying “so what” but I feel pretty strongly that if I’m going to publicly criticize when people do things wrong I should also publicly acknowledge when they do a good job.

Your experience was far better than mine at the McKinney Texas airport.

But you are right to talk about people doing their job correctly, we hear all the time about the bad ones.

Don't you just hate it when things go nice and easy the way that they should?

I like the remote office at Denver International, except for the lack of parking. I was in and out in around 10 minutes and that included the elevator ride and waiting for them to buzz me into the office

Same thing for me a few months ago, Houston off Beltway 8. Guy was shockingly helpful and quick. Even made extra copies for me, at his own suggestion "just in case". Sure was glad to get in and out so easily

The office I visit is off airport and it takes about ten minutes to get the paperwork, then another half hour detailing my previous and upcoming trip plus questions on my choice of firearms; bunch of good guys and gals to deal with.

I have to go there and do the same. What's the date on the form you used?

I’ve done the 4457 cha cha 6 times and every time the experience was the same as @Russ16. Fast and friendly.

The latest forms have no date, other than the date stamped on them by the CBP agent when they certify your form.

Your report is very helpful, thank you for posting it. For anyone near Wilmington, NC, I’ve had to go to border patrol many times to get a 4457 filled out, it’s very quick and easy there.

The only thing I had that represented an issue was with a lady that freaked out when I just walked in with my rifles in their cases. She barked at me that I should have come in empty handed prior to and let her know what I was needing to do.

Funny, I did that before the agents looked at me like I was nuts and told me just to come in next time with the rifles.

Other than that, always very nice and usually quite quick to get me in and out.

Current form on the website says 06/24 in the bottom left corner. I know a few years ago they didn't have an expiration date, but now it looks like they do.

It might be the type of case. I had my two in a hard case with locks on just like I was flying. Figured that would attract less attention walking through the terminal.

There is no longer an expiration date on the form. That caused a lot of trouble for some folks who tried using it after the form expiration date. Sorry I misunderstood your question.

A 4457 is good for as long as you can read the writing on it. There is no expiration date for it.

The date on the bottom is the form date and has nothing to do with any expiration except for in the eyes of the South African rifle permit system. If you have any doubts just go to the US Customs web site or do a search for US CBP 4457.

The South African SAP's office also considers the 4457 as a firearm license, which it is not.
