Good News for a change

My new gunshop facility was approved by the SAPS and we moved shop in mid December and started trading... The new indoor 5x lane shooting range has been waiting for approval.. Kept getting postponed... Eventually the guy came down from Pretoria and checked it all out... FULLY approved... and public shooting has commenced. A lengthy 15x month process from start to finish BUT I'm HAPPY and rearing to get the business going flat out!!

finally got the scope mounted on my new 375. Its a late New Haven gun that I found still new in the box. Talley quick detach rings and a swaro z6i make for a nice setup.

Life is good, especially if you consider the alternative!! My life is better than I deserve and I am so blessed to be living it. Have 5 healthy kids, 12 wonderful grand kids, wonderful sons and daughters in law, and 2 greatgrand kids on the way. Plus a really beautiful wife who, for some unknown reason, loves me!! And I just received a J Sips and Sons .458 Lott barrel for my Blaser R8 Safari stock. Going to the range tomorrow. Yup, life is good!!

It's a good day when something that didn't go right (a gunsmith that got the holes for the scope mount misaligned) is corrected, at least for use. when returned by the gunsmith the bolt handle didn't clear the scope ocular and the scope was pointed several degrees over the line of the bore. I took it to a different gunsmith and discussed various options. I took the rifle home and pondered the situation. The original Mauser scope mount has rings that are 26.5mm. The Kollmorgen scope is 26mm. So I used small pieces of leather to fill-in the .5mm, additionally I put more leather on the bottom of the rear ring and top of the front ring, effectively shimming the scope to where the scope is now in line with the bore and the bolt handle clears the ocular without having to machine any metal off of the bolt handle. The rifle is an Oberndorf 98 Gew from 1916 rebarrelled with a Shilen 7x57mm. I just finished the alignment this afternoon so will be taking it to the range on what should be another good day.

Hi Ray, Would it not have been better to use brass shims instead of leather? I'm sure you know what you are doing, but it seems to be more of a temporary fix?

Basically it was a temporary or more precisely a prototype fix. It was to see if I could take the slack out of the slightly large rings while solving the misalignment problem. With the success of the shims I'm now looking into getting something on the order of those Burris spacers, possibly neoprene to take the place of the leather.

This is a splendid idea , Shootist43 !
You are an extremely good human being who always thinks of keeping up the spirits of his fellow brother sports men .
I will share mine . I purchased a box of Lyavale Express 36 gram 2.75 inch long AAA cartridges ( which have recently begun to be imported in to Bangladesh ) and I went on a shikar for Greylag Geese last week with a few friends of mine
. Let the results speak for themselves .

I took both of them down with a quick " Left & Right " at 50 yards with my " old Belgian " . These were some of the longest shots which I have ever taken in my life , at winged game .
Both specimens weighed more than 2.5 Kilograms .
I hope to try these Lyavale Express AAA cartridges in May , on our driven hunt for Kakar deer .
I also received the good news that I am eligible to compete in the annual Chittagong port boating race on this August with my yacht .

How about some pictures of your new place?

OK.. Hope this download stuff works... In essence, my new shop was a double volume factory type building, with an upstairs office area.
We stripped out all the excess drywall office space and then built in the shooting range and firearm safe in an L shape, the roof of this L being the floor of the now upstairs section. For the balance of the 1st floor decking, we installed steel post and cross members and timbered this off.
The original office area is now our TRAINING CLASSROOM for candidates wishing to be able to apply for firearms license here.
The gunsafe is 8mx6m walk in... So only needs to be unlocked in morning and then locked again at knockoff.. FULLY alarm protected, CCTV coverage and JAIL Cell type security bars for ALL windows and front door access. The range has the < type steel plates with a slot connecting the plates, into which all bullets are deflected then entering a steel pipe system, which reduces the bullet energy to zero and bullets are collected in buckets.
Over and above this, to enable training to be done with. 223 caliber, we hung 4x layers of 12 mm rubber conveyor belts effectively closing off the < opening, further reducing bullet energy before the steel plates are struck.. Works like a charm...

Forgot to mention that the 5x ranges will be equipped with rails and motors to send out and retrieve the targets.. Currently simply free standing target frames.

Bruce, that is an awesome looking place!
Question: in the first photo it looks like a rug made out of all kinds of skins? If so, that is super nice! I want one!

Yes, I used all my flatskins and back skins to cover the "trophy room area" floor. They are all still loose, but overlap, not sewn together!!

I just started thinking about our compatriot hunters in South Africa, the BILTONG Hunter. I think they might be getting a small bonanza this fall with the halt to the foreign hunter invasion.
Perhaps, that will be good news for some.

Amazing. Man, you got it all. I did notice the Africa with the big 5 at the gunshop entrance appears to be backwards. Is that intentional or a mistake?

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
