I see. Thanks for the info. This is super helpful for a DG gun noob. For me, being a reliable shooter, ammo availability, and usability (not looking for a safe queen) are highest on my priority list when considering firearms. Maybe with this disconnect between value and performance, the 416 Remington might be the ticket for me vs. other 40s. Value is very important, but I’m not overly concerned with the highest potential resale value, or appreciation, with this particular rifle. It will be carried and used in 2025 on buff, and hopefully many more trips to come. I recently bought a 375 H&H InterArms Whitworth (10/89 totally stock for now) for this purpose and I really like it, but I realize I can handle more recoil comfortably after shooting the 375 so looking at a 40 of some kind to fit the bill.

It will more than do the job and you will find great values on the Rem

just don’t pay the same price for the Rem versus the Rigby. You should get a discount versus resale value of the two

And usually 416 Remington ammo is cheaper.Nosler has it on sale for $85 a box....much cheaper than Rigby ammo.

I suspect that the following calibers will continue to be most popular for decades to come and have the widest available ammunition which does feed into resale value. I say this in part because some of the newer calibers (despite their clear design improvements) are not surpassing the following old reliables (Bolt Gun) cartridges.

I like your list but I would swap the 404 Jeffery with the 416 Rem Mag. While the 404 Jeffery is an old iconic cartridge and chambered in some pretty expensive rifles, I believe the 416 Rem Mag is chambered in far more rifles, more affordable rifles and better ammo available at lesser cost than the 404 Jeffery. Of course a bespoke Jeffery bolt action in 404 would have better resale value.

If resale value is concerned I would probably remove the 458WM from this list. And rather put the .500Jeffery and .505Gibbs

Even the 450rigby, in an identical rifle, would probably keep better value than 458WM

Hey, where's the .416 Taylor? It was a "new kid" SAAMI spec'd cartridge in the early-mid '70s BEFORE the RM, Rugers, .450 Rigby and A Squares. Jon Wooters took his to Africa and killed a great lion and cape buffalo with it! If Winchester hadn't dropped the ball manufacturing factory ammo for it after they and Ruger built prototype rifles for it, we may have never heard of the .416 Remington Mag (actually the almost identical .416 Hoffman which WAS a wildcat at the time and Remington stole George Hoffman's design) and .416 Ruger. Bill Ruger may have never resurrected the almost extinct .416 Rigby in his GREAT Ruger RSM if he had chambered it in .416 Taylor first as a production rifle? We'll never know but the Taylor should be on your "new kids" list. Thank you from the many .416 Taylor aficionados residing here on AH.

To your point the Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby. I purchased it 20+ years ago. I know it's not the right scope for this rifle. But it was my small rifle on this safari and my PH wanted me to put an optic on it that was good out to 200 yards. So due to the magnum action I needed a long tube scope.

I love my .416 Taylor, normal action length, 21” barrel it’s a joy to carry on the trail. And puts CEB solids and Raptors into one small group.

I didn't know Ruger had made one only having seen 375's until now. If 416 Ruger ammo was more readily available, I would probably make an unwise financial decision & buy yet another rifle I don't actually need.

Go for it. I am a big Buffalo bore fan of their handgun ammo. Have talked to the owner and I have 100% faith in their rifle ammo as well. Plan on buying some soon.

I feel your pain on the lack of will power when it comes to acquiring left handed rifles. I’m find it very easy to rationalize the purchase since they are hard to find. What all did you add to the safe this month?

I already had a LH Sako 85 Hunter & a LH Steyr CL II in 30-06 so I absolutely did not need another one in that caliber. But a pristine, new in box, LH Remington 700 Custom Classic with a Timney trigger and Leupold scope mount was sitting there for $799 and no one else bid on it. It's really nice & I can't see any indication that it was ever fired. I was thinking of having it rebored into a 35 Whelen since there aren't any factory LH models in that chambering that I know of. Or I might set it up exclusively for nighttime hog hunting. I'll think of something to do with it!
