Going to SA to hunt? Be prepared for power blackouts

I just finished a Teams call with RSA. The moderator of the meeting was "shedded" right out of the meeting!

I am sitting in ATL right now waiting for my flight home to TX. The load shedding while I was there was more or less a small burden. More of an annoyance than anything. The lodge I stayed at had an inverter and they were getting solar installed as I was leaving In each room, they kept a light plugged in that charges while there is power and then turns on when the power switches off.

I did not see any load shedding occurring at JHB or the City Lodge while I was there. Also East London airport seemed unaffected but I was not there for a long enough time to see.

One thing I used quite often was an Anker brand power bank. I used it to charge my phone and headphones when load shedding was going on

Not saying this applies to your moderator, but power outages are used as a great excuse to duck and dive. 'Sorry we are late with your order, the power is bad.......'

More and more outfitters (and I would assume other businesses/industries as well) are going 100% solar in order to avoid the load shedding problem.. Bos en Dal (where I hunt each year) went solar.. the last time I had to deal with load shedding (which wasnt all that much of a problem honestly) was on the 2021 hunt.. We experienced zero power outages on our 2022 hunt, and I expect we wont experience any power outages on our hunt that is scheduled this July..

The issue as I understand it moving forward is going to be that the SA govt is now wanting to tax (at a high rate) people that have invested in solar.. If they cant get their money out of you for using govt provided power (which often isnt provided), they want to get their money out of you for using your own generated power...

Yea its basically non stop these days.....lots of us have solar and generators etc.

If they ever fix Eskom there won't be many customers left. TIA right :)

It really shouldn't affect your guys hunts much as most places will have backups.

Cheers

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
