Giraffes declared an endangered species in Kenya

full

Giraffes have been declared critically endangered in Kenya.

Bloomberg reported that according to Kenya Wildlife Service, the country has lost 40% of its giraffe population in the past 30 years.

Only 659 Rothschild’s giraffes remain.

The Kenyan government has launched a land-use programme to secure the habitats of endangered giraffes.

According to the Nairobi Wire, the National Recovery and Action Plan for Giraffe has been set up to combat the decline of the animals due to poaching, habitat loss and climate-shock diseases.

Three species of giraffe have been added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, namely the Kordofan and Nubian giraffes as “critically endangered” and the reticulated giraffe as “endangered”.

According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the Kordofan giraffe is mainly found in southern Chad, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and western South Sudan.

Nubian giraffes, mainly found in west central Kenya, South Sudan, western Ethiopia and northern Uganda, number 2,645.

There are approximately 8,700 reticulated giraffes, also know as Somali giraffes, in southern Somalia and southern Ethiopia.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), 60% of the world’s animal population has been wiped out by human activity in the past 40 years.

Other critically endangered species include the black rhino, eastern lowland gorilla, Malayan tiger and the orangutan, according to the WWF.

i love using Kenya as an example of banning trophy hunting. You could not script a better case study on why sustain utilization of game animals through multiple channels is the best way to insure that a species thrives.

Watch... some 'anti' will throw the blame game and try make it land at our feet, depsite hunting being banned there since the '70's

Sometimes I feel there is no remedy for stupid...!

There is a remedy brother, but it isn’t legal!

In 1973 Kenya began the project to protect all wildlife. Get rid of those damned hunters, and save the beasts. They had about 165, 000 elephant at that time, by aerial survey. The 2016 survey revealed 16,000 elephant.....a reduction of about 91%. There have been further reductions, and different surveys that have put the number lower......at 12 thousand......although the most recent count was back up to 14 thousand. If they do the same thing for the Reticulated Giraffe, then it is doomed. There is a rumor among NGO members.... unproven at this point......President Uhuru Kenyatta burned $200,000,000 worth of ivory in 2016...a symbolic gesture he said, "Kenya will not stand by while the elephant disappears". This money.....which could have funded elephant protection projects for a century....went up in smoke. It was the people's money, not kenyatta's, and it was not very liquid. The President.....who had traveled more than all prior Kenya presidents combined, became a well funded, international jet setter (with a new jets). The rumor is that he traded $200 Million of the people's money, for his own money, via fire sale. Clever. Collected from a consortium of Greenie organizations that wrote him checks. A good friend, working in North Africa for an international aid agency, says much of his opposition believes this to be true. Would explain how these decisions....dumb and disastrous for a population, get sold to the people as "the right thing to do". Both the people and the elephant (giraffe in this case) suffer.................FWB

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
