Good morning all!

So, this year I'm going to try to get a giraffe. It's not going to be an awesome "stink bull" unfortunately but I was offered a small cull opportunity for some females and at the price I can't resist. I also cannot make up my mind as to what taxidermy I should have in mind. Our tallest ceiling is about 8ft and some change, but I'm not sure that a female neck mount what look that good. On the other hand, I'm not sure it wouldn't either! I'm also thinking about getting some of the hide to make rifle cases or something. As I said, it's up in the air at the moment so if any of you have some suggestions I'd appreciate them.

As always, thank you for your time!

Two mounts I’ve seen which looked good are...
One had the base of the neck/ start of the shoulder areas the base on the floor (as if a live animal that had it’s neck sticking straight out, parallel to the ground, was rotated 90 degrees) and the neck began to turn and then curved with the the head pointed down. It did crowd the ceiling which gave it a little of the “crammed in” look, but still looked impressive.
The second surprised me on how good it looked. It had a shortened neck emerging from a heavily grassed and branched pedestal, with a slight forward lean.
Keep some of the skin for other pedestal mounts. I think it looks great as panels on pedestal bases.
Good luck on your hunt.

I always thought a ice rug would be awesome in a big room. One with leather piping so it's finished elegantly.

Imo floor pedestals for giraffe are the way to go. The form can be modified to accommodate a lower ceiling. You can bring the head down and turn it which will give extra height clearance. I’m doing this with my giraffe as soon as it get back from the tannery for a display in my new studio which only has 9’ ceilings.
The back hide on one is enormous, you can make a ton of stuff out of them from chairs and ottomans to bags and cases. I’ll likely do a chair and ottoman, a few bags and cases, and some pillows out of mine. Even a female giraffe is a big animal so you’ll have a lot to work with.
I have the legs and feet as well which I will make lamps out of.

I like the floor mount idea, and thank you for the other ideas as well. Wonder if I could get my wife to agree to some pillows or a rug.

Here is a few things you can show her I do purses and wallets too!

I would recomend that you maybe have a word with @huntinlabs, I know that he is going through the customization of his mount right now. Ceiling height is his limiting factor too.

This is by far the coolest giraffe mount I have ever seen. Definitely not for low ceiling homes but almost makes you willing to add on just to have a mount like this!

This floor pedestal is right at 8 feet because he went to the man cave!

Keep in mind the extra cost to tan a hide this thick as well as the shipping cost.

Out of curiosity, because it is out of my league atm, is there enough hide on an elephant to do a couch with all the cushions?

Female Giraffe are a lot smaller than males. Shoulder pedestal fits in room with 8' ceiling with room to spare. Will have to be custom form. Supply companies don't carry much in a small giraffe. As most people mount large males. From end of mane on Females back to top of head about 6 to 6 1/2 '.

This is one reason I love this site. Wait for a moment and an expert or three will chime in. That's a massive difference. I think the rug/rifle case should be perfect. A neck mount would be too small as a representation of such a beautiful animal. Maybe keep the skull, not sure.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
