Hello, my dad's birthday is coming up and he is going on a hunting trip to Namibia in this time (April). I live in a different country than him and would really like to send him something (so not too large, or something I can buy on ebay in Canada) that he can use for his trip. I think he pretty much has everything he may possibly need (he is IMPOSSIBLY difficult to shop for!) so if anyone has any ideas of what may be useful or interesting for him please please do contact me!

Bw,

K

Go to Amazon.com and type in "african books hunting" There are a lot of great books that will help him pass the time on the long flight. I am currently reading "Death in the Long Grass" by Peter Hathaway Capstick. It is hard to put the book down. Once you get the book, write him a personal message inside the cover. Maybe something you always wanted to say to him but never did.

Hi Stretch,
Thanks for the idea - and I do like the personal message. However his first language is not English so he may find reading a novel in English a chore. I will look up the one you are reading nonetheless - maybe it could get him interested. If you have any other ideas please do send them my way!

If he hasn't been before and doesn't have it, a copy of The Perfect Shot would be great. I read it and re read it several times before my first trip and it was instrumental in the success of my trip. It doesn't matter if you are an excellent shot if you don't know where to aim.

Of all the things I brought to Namibia my first time, the lip balm ended up very high on the list of things I found helpful. It is damn dry there. It won't be much of a gift, but I assure you he'll appreciate having it.

For something extravagant, I got my wife a pair of Swarovski EL binoculars before our trip. I have the bigger ones and got her the small ones. Mine were better when hunting from a stand, but hers absolutely ruled the day when we were walking. Not so much the weight as the size: they just don't get in the way like the full sized ones do.

It is cool there in the mornings. A fleece jacket or wool sweater is nice to have. Even if he is pretty well stocked on sweaters, a nice loden wool sweater is hard not to appreciate.

Have you heard of Kindle? It is a wireless device launched by Amazon.com to aid reading books. It is portable and is extremely easy to use. This gadget is hugely popular and is used widely. Kindle also allows for translation of text into the desired language, thus making it easier for the user to read and understand it. Kindle is hugely popular because of its translation facility as every user is able to read any book in his or her own language with desired readability and interest.

Hi Stretch
We have the kindle in Canada. Great suggestion. Capstick's books are not available at this time but there are many other African hunting books available. I hope Kenyon gets your message.
Cheers, Mike

"the perfect shot" is ... perfect. And no need to speak english, it is self-explanatory.
Gators and gloves are a MUST. Lots of thorns and spikes and he will have to crawl...

If you know his shoe size and want to spend a bit more, buy him a pair of Courtney boots. Even new, they are just so comfortable and last for ever. And they are THE reference shoes for the african hunter

How about a nice leather journal where he can write down memories from his hunt/hunts?

courtney boots! or a ''cartridge belt''

If he doesnt already have it, then get him a quality binocular harness. Affordable and easy to ship. It makes an absolute world of difference to the strain of carrying a binocular in the bush.

I wish you luck.

Thank you!!

Thank you to all for your great ideas and your help! I have decided on that "Perfect Shot" book as my mum checked and he doesn't have it (phew!). I will keep all these other ideas for next year!
