scammers are all over it seems nowadays. I'm toying with one now via txt message that replied to a WTB ad I have listed there and also here regarding a kind of hard to come by bolt action. He has made an account a few months ago on that forum and because they are in general dumbasses regarding our hobby, they browse other forums and will copy and paste posts from people on unrelated forums to appear they can speak the lingo.

He pulled pictured from GB of a rifle in then caliber I'm looking for but it's not what I'm looking for and its pretty well used. Funnily enough that same rifle has been in my watch list for a while. He says it's a safe queen. When I'm done wasting his time via txts ill post the exchange here.

The rifle in question is a Ruger Flat Bolt or a Round Top in 7x57. He had 5 posts over the last 3 months on that Ruger forum and this morning I suppose after seeing my WTB ad there decided he would take a try at me and PM'd me a phone to txt him saying he had one "just collecting dust "

I decided to play so txted him to which he sent me pics i instantly recognized of a well-used and worn Mk1 being sold by a shop out of NY for far more than it's worth. Not even a flat bolt at all. He proudly proclaimed it's a safe queen lol. ill attach the convo here in pics but a mod can remove if too much.

Ah ha! I see the mods have left that clown's phone number on the text conversations. I'm texting him with a better offer: $500 + a fully seduced chicken. A few notes for us all on AI / photoshop pics, based on the posted up picture form the OP.

1. Lighting. In the example above, lighting is constant across all elements. If you're taking your pictures in a studio, you can do that. If it's a real person doing it at home, you cannot. It's almost impossible to take a 'normal photo' without shadows. If there aren't any, be suspicious

2. Slightly 2 dimensional. Normal cameras have a degree of 'fisheye'. You cannot easily get just the front element of multiple objects without seeing an edge. Look at the boxes in the example. Front faces only. Not possible without photoshop. Look at the paper, it looks like it's glued to the table, no texture. Red flag.

3. Slightly soft focus. The overall image has good resolution, but look at the edges of the text. That's been edited. Red flag.

4. Neutral backgrounds, but wood effect. Not only is there no depth perception, and no shadow on the background, not only is it soft focus, but it just 'doesn't look quite right'. Look at the background, look at a real wooden table. That's clearly a stock photo being used as a background.

5. Instances of poor render. You can see some fuzzy black dots in the example. Not only is this a clue because it's obscuring the image, but it's clearly not just a 'spot on the lens'. You can see the edges of the render are blocky, you can see the constant color of the dot, the lack of 'natural' features. Big red flag. same with the edges of the 'writing. that's digitally rendered.

6. If you're buying an object, I'd ask for the object, the username, the face of the person. Digital image software really struggles with faces, so if it doesn't hit 'uncanny valley' you're probably good.

Sorry this happened to you OP, it's a crap situation and I'm not posting this to dump on you, just some signs to hopefully save some other members having the same issue.

I did a search on the address and name used by the scammer. Might be helpful if trying to track him down.
