Getting Attacked

Yes, during my hunt for my first man eating Royal Bengal tiger... he spent the whole night trying to attack me after I shot him.

I've also been charged by Gaur, Asian sloth bear & wild boar.

In Africa, I've been charged by:
Cape buffalo

Hippopotamus on land (the most !)

Lion

Leopard (when hunted over hounds & pushed long enough, they will eventually always charge)

Elephant (the only one from this list, where I actually would have gotten killed if somebody else didn't save me)

If you hunt big game for 54 years (and counting), you're bound to face a charge now & then (even though I obviously don't go looking for charges).

I have been attacked twice while hunting in the US...both times were while hunting waterfowl in Nevada!

The first was a coot I shot. It was injured and when I when I waded out to the water to pick it up, it viciously began kicking my hand and wrist with its clawed feet, drawing blood.

The second time was a Golden Eye duck I shot, I thought it was dead, but I guess it was just stunned. I had picked it up and taken it into the blind with me. A few minutes later it suddenly resurrected and began wildly flapping its wings and pecking at me - almost had a heart attack!

In the north central mountains of Pennsylvania, it was after dark and I had an uneasy feeling I was being stalked. I must have had some left over scent attractant on me. After some time I was able to elude the stalker and make it home unhindered. I forget the name of the gin mill.

1989, while hunting brown bear, my guide and I came across a sow bear with a cub, she stood up and looked at us from 17 steps, I asked the guide, 'will she come for us', he said, "no, she'll 'F' off", about that time she dropped and came right for us. Guide had a scope cover on his scope and did not have a round in the chamber, believe me, God was there with us. With God's help I was able to raise my gun up and somehow shoot her in the mouth, not a chance in a million I could ever shoot a charging brown bear on my own.

Hunting elk over a water hole and had a black bear sow and cubs come in. She saw me reaching for the bear spray on my hip and came at me. She got the whole canister in the face and abandoned chase while I was doing a climbing squirrel imitation farther up a pine tree. It’s the only time I ever carried bear spray and only did it so I could tell my mother in law that I loved the birthday present she gave me. . .
I also once had a fracas with a bull moose but I blame that one on my dog!

A turkey in South Dakota. It was during the fall hunt. We were hunting Turkey, and I shot a big Tom when it took off to fly. I ran and picked it up from the neck,
and the turkey was not quite dead, and proceeded to kick my ass with its wings and legs. :ROFLMAO: I couldn’t use my shotgun, so I went to the ground and wrestled the turkey, and tried to break his neck while getting beat up. I was finally able to stomp his head and killed it. When I got up from the ass kicking I received, all my buddies were laughing their asses off, and no one helped cause they thought it was too funny to watch. I won the fight, and I was lucky to have my hunting vest, otherwise it could have ended badly for me. My pride was hurt, but I walked out without a scratch :ROFLMAO:

Sounds like something to add to one of the “what is the purpose of carrying a hunting knife?” threads.

that would have made a nice video

When i was a kid and got into the canadian geese. I knocked one down with my single shot 20 guage. Went over to pick him up and he came right at me. This was a surprise as I thought he was dead. Did a hip shot and took his head clear off at about six feet of distance. My dad laughed his ass off. Nothing compared to some these others experience. Did teach me some respect for the game.

I have not yet hunted dangerous game, but I have been charged by an irate male goose in a Stuttgart park. A spartan kick to his breast sent him flapping backwards two yards, and nary a goose has ever bothered me since.

Another story occurred while mountain lion hunting in New Mexico. Tracking dogs treed a large Tom. While we were setting up for the shot the cat decided to come out of the tree, He hit the ground and took a swipe at 3 of us before moving on to another tree.

Rabid red fox. Fall of 1957. I was waliking across the road at home and I saw this fox approaching up the road. I stopped to watch it and it lowered its head and started running at me. As per usual I had my 22 rifle with me and when it didn't stop I shot it at about 20 feet. When I looked at it close up it was frothing at the mouth. We took it to the game warden and he pronounced it rabid and destroyed it.
