A real Aussie bush icon too.

I saw them feeding in the paddock so I rode home for my camera and snapped quite a few pics off. Unfortunately there were no cock birds with the hens today. The males are absolutely magnificent lookers with their contrasting red head plumage.
You`ll have to do with the hens today but I will keep an eye out for the males, btw they are feeding on Dandelion roots.

Cool, thanks for sharing. Reminds me of the parrots in New Zealand. Kea's I think. Guide called them go-away birds because of all the noise they made when around us.

Grand looking birds sir!

Thank you, after the rain stopped i went back into the same place looking for these birds. They are not always to be found, they are not backyard bird tray birds, they are real bush dwellers.

The cock bird was feeding on the d/roots as the others were. when i found them after a while.

Great photos. How close are you able to get? And, what type of camera/lense combo - don't tell me a phone!

Canon 7d 11 @ 20 metres,GG`s often become so engrossed in their feeding that it can be a relatively easy task in getting closer than every other species.
Yet other times I couldn't get within 50 metres.

Incredible birds, love parrots... Do you know where their names come from?

That is an awesome native bird. About the closest thing we have here in the Eastern USA I can thing of is Pileated Woodpeckers (the only picture I have is a touch too fuzzy). Wild turkeys are something as well, but not quite as boldly colorful.

Wow, some amazing close up photos!

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. Bruce
