GAITERS!

Yeah, very "authentic" ... almost. Good luck keeping those extra short slippery rope-twist nylon laces tied! Pfft. Expect to be bending over a lot retying them. Loose gaiters = useless gaiters. For Stewart Granger "authentic" they should be leather laces. But hey, those glittering golden laces sure look pretty.

Fifty bucks plus postage and handling. From UK to North America what would that be? Another fifty bucks? But for a hundred bucks I'd have something with Rigby name on it (hopefully ... somewhere). I may not be able to afford one of their bespoke rifles but a pair of their gaiters won't break anyone's bank account. I bet they sell like hotcakes!

My only experience is the Eastern Cape so I am sure things are different in different places. My first trip I took some KUIU gaiters. I never wore them. I had my pants tucked in my boots and had zero issues. The one day I tried to wear shorts (because it was hot) my lower legs got shredded.

I usally wear long pants, but still use gaiters, just tell your outfitter to provide some kamaste !

Use these ....get them when at sci every couple of years...got 2 pairs last year so sorted for a while....

I use both, leather from African Sporting Creations and canvas/nylon from African Hunt Products. I wear them if hunting in shorts and mostly here in the south during dove season.

If you are in Namibia a company called Save Your Socks make excellent leather gaiters. They have a Facebook page. You can order from them in advance and have them delivered for a small charge to wherever you are hunting. They are small money relatively. Mine have lasted several trips and I wear them here to stop cr#p getting into my boots.

Leather or canvas. My preferred ones are canvas with press studs and Velcro. This way you can put them on after your boots and off before the boots when in camp. I have worn these in some tough bush here and they have never let me down, even in lawyer vine country.

I prefer canvas gaiters. I use them even when wearing long pants as they keep my boot laces tied and prevent debris from coming in the tops of my boots. I treat mine with bug dope and that helps keep the critters out. With the leather ones, I sweat too much and I feel like I have Paso Fino training weights on my feet.

Safe hunting
I was just going to ask, if I plan on wearing pants the whole time do I need boot gaiters, but you make a great point with the shoe laces (not wanting things sticking to those). As I going on my first trip to Africa in less than 2 months, this item keeps popping up as a suggested piece.

that just adds Africa realism to the stories

Gaiters over here are tall lower leg (shin) coverings, that go low to cover the tops of your boots, to stop the nasties from attempting to kill you, and most things here are trying to kill you. They may not be able to, but they will try. They tend to be leather or canvas with a heavy woven nylon like covering
Those short little ones we tend to use to stop grass seeds or sawdust from the chainsaw getting into our boots and are usually canvas or nylon
Gumpy

+1 Leather.

African sporting creations has them. Reasonable cost. They will last a long time.

I wear shorts in africa unless it is quite cold. Your legs will get torn up from the thorns, but that is part of the deal. Shorts are quieter.

With good leather gaiters and a sandy surface, you can also hunt in low top shoes.

The short ones we tend to call sock covers/protectors.

I don't care for them when wearing pants. I don't like wearing shorts when hunting, even in hot weather, because the pants protect your legs to some degree and also keep things out of your boots. For me, unless hiking in snow, I skip the gaiters.

This seems like a minor accessory for a hunt. However every single video I have watched almost everyone in the party is wearing them. I fully plan to be in shorts for my hunt so what does everyone prefer their gaiters be made of? Leather or Canvas or Other. (if their is one)
Boyt canvass are my preference.

I have custom leather from Botswana, Rigby leather and boyt canvas. All are great. I don’t think the Rigby do any better job than the boyt so if budget is an issue…

I tested several and ended up sewing mines with specific dimensions. Heavy canvas with elastic. I’ve wore them from the Sahara, to rainforest to the southern elephants. I kind of love them now
