You also have to realize that a adult bison has no natural predator other than where wolves are present.
I had one when we were scouting for a bison hunt in Utah where I got within 30 yards of and all he did was to give me a stink eye before he wandered off.

Any large animal, with horns and sharp hooves can ruin your day, unless you sort it out quickly. i have been bitten by dogs several times, most annoying, but i do not want to know what it feels like to be stuck with a horn. Shoot straight an be quick about it.

You got that right. They kill.more people in Yellowstone than grizzlies do. Of course, it's usually the result of dumb tourists playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes.

I remember watching a pair of bulls playing "headbutt" in the rain in Yellowstone, about a hundred yards away; the impact of the collisions shook my car ...

We used to be afraid of domestic bulls when I was growing up.........and for good reason......some of them would chase you down and mess you up.
One time my grandma was working in her flower beds and heard one bellow. She didn't even look up as she thought it was bearing down on her and she took off for the house........lol.........she never did see the bull or hear of one being loose, but she wasn't taking any chances.

I love Bison and would love to hunt...er kill?...one. But it would be NOTHING like hunting Cape Buffalo. Being in Oklahoma, and minutes from the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, I see Bison regularly. They are not even close to being as intimidating or dangerous. Since they now live on mostly open prairies (though I do believe an Alaska hunt would be more challenging), hunting one would really just be more of find one, walk out, and shoot it.

I can definitely help you with a trophy bison hunt. We hunt 5 or 6 of them a year plus meat bulls and cull cows.

If you butchered an 8 year old domestic bull, you will have the same.
My BIL and his dad have raised buffalo in the mountains of Colorado for over 50 years. Butchered at the same age as domestic beef, buffalo are better eating. Leaner than a finished beef, but very close to pasture raised and slaughtered domestic.

I've been around both MANY American Bison and a couple of African Cape Buffalo herds.


You don't have to be too concerned about bison. I've walked through several herds to go fishing with no problem.

Cape Buffalo are 1000 times more dangerous! (Please do not kid yourself into thinking otherwise)

Don't get too comfortable strolling through a herd of bison. My aunt, a well known western sculptor, ended up gored through the thigh, thrown about 20' or so, and spent a couple weeks in the hospital after getting out of her car to get better photos of them (she had been warned not to do so by my BIL's dad). The "domestic" bull would have finished the job if the cows had not surrounded her and fended him off until he got bored. Fortunately, my cousin was with her and managed to drag her back into the car. My aunt lived to sculpt again.
One of their cows was bought from a ranch in WY. She had left both of her horns in WY, stuck in the door of the pickup truck she tossed onto it's side. After bashing every exposed surface of the truck, she finally wandered off and let the 2 ranch hands, who were in the truck, walk out a mile or two. Another "domestic" buffalo. Don't ever trust one.
That said, my Grandmother told me about the time her mom, about 76 years old at the time, found a handful of the neighbor's herd in her prized rose garden. When my Grandpa went out to see what the commotion was, he found his MIL in her housecoat, long grey hair streaming in the breeze, as she swatted at the buffalo with a broom, successfully chased them out of her roses. None of them wanted to mess with the crazy Icelandic woman with a stick!

For those of you that may be dreaming of your first (or next) cape Buffalo hunt, have you ever hunted one of the North American Bison?

This is a bucket list hunt of mine in Canada however apparently drawing a tag is quite the challenge.

Get’R Done!! Because quite honestly once you have truly hunted Cape Buffalo you’ll forget all about Bison, there is no comparison….
With that said the meat on Bison is spectacular as you say I had it once and since then several times, it’s awesome.

While my opinion might be slightly bias due to my love for hunting Cape Buff when it comes to picking a hunt between the two. I’ll hunt buffalo every day and eat bison meat in the evening

There are a lot of bison on the Indian Reservation near where I live. I often hunt ducks there. They don't seem too wary or aggressive. They also don't seem to have that "stomp-you-to-death" vindictive streak like Cape Buffalo either. The Chinese tourists that pet them in Yellowstone Park every year survive. Most of them.........FWB

one hunter was killed here in the yukon few years ago. really to take seriously ... i found the forest buffalo in car way more dangerous and nervous than other buffalos and that is including cape and the western ones.

They might not be as dangerous as Cape Buffalo, but still a dream hunt for me. I hope to draw a Henry Mountain tag someday before I die. I'd love to do that hunt on horseback. Different type of hunt, but romantic in my mind!

There are occasional tags available for Wood Bison in the Northwest Territories. Bulls of this subspecies occasionally reach weights close to 3000lbs making them almost as large as gaur!

There was a article in the RMEF Bugle magazine a few years ago about a bison in the Utah Book Cliffs that charged a hunting party on horses. I don't remember exactly what happened but a hunter was seriously injured and I believe that a couple of horses had to be put down. Then as the outfitter headed back to their base camp to get help for the injured hunter the bison charged again and a hunter who had been left to take care of the injured hunter ended up shooting the bison.

But bison like any large animal can be approached by people and if they decided not to run off it usually doesn't end well for the person who got too close. Just look at what happens up in Yellowstone every year.

Bison are not afraid of anything and their non aggressive nature shows it. While at times they wont run away and just stand their ground don't get too close. Cape buffalo on the other hand have a number of predators to contend with and most likely don't take kindly to people who get too close.

The American "Bison" is a great hunt! We were charged by an angry cow and for a second the herd turned and faced us. SO you can have some "excitement"! After the shot the work begins!
